Mr Edmund Yates has been sentenced to four months'imprisonmentfor libelling tho Earl of Lonsdale in an article which appeared in the columns of the World.
; MELBOURNE, April 3 (evening), The woman killed by the railway collision has not yet been identified. Tho second class carriage, which was next the tender of the passenger train,. and was smashed to pieces, contained twenty passengers, nearly all of whom' were injured, some being pinned to their seats by pieces of broken timber. Among these were Mrs Beath, whoso thigh is broken; Anna Peet, injured internally ; Mrs Milne, suffering from concussion of the brain; and Phoebe Hurt, seriously injured and now. in a state of coma.
The engines of both trains have been rendered useless by the collision, and great damage has been done to the rolling stock. Traffic was'for some time suspended, but has now been restored. It has been ascertained that the stationmaster at Werribee was absent at a concert, when the collision occurred, MELBOURNE, April 3. Received April 4, 0.50 p.m.—Mr Biddle, the stationmaster at Werribee, who left his daughter in charge of the station, and is thus alleged to have caused the disastrous railway accident near Little River station, has been suspended, Another accident occurred last night on the Echuca line at Suubury, 24 miles fram Melbourne, The boiler of an engine burst, and the driver was severely hurt. The fireman of the engine is missing.
MELBOURNE, April 3. Received April 3, 9.50 p.m.—The latest news to hind from Sunbnry is that the driver of the engine, the boiler of which exploded, is very seriously injured, and is not expected to recover. The fireman's body, quite dead, has been found some distance from the engine, wheie it'had been blown by the force of the explosion. LONDON, April 3, Telegrams aro to hand from'' Cherbourg announcing/that the body of tlio Duke of Albany was embarked at that port to-day for England, the Prince of Wales proceeds with steamer, A most disasterbus fire occurred today in Paternoster Row, and raged fully five hours, resulting in tho destruction of several houses and immenso damage to property, 1 and the loss will, it is expected, prove, enormous. MELBOURNE, ! . Friday. Arrived, this morning—Wairarapa. The enquiry into'tho Little Paver railway collision will commence on Saturday. Hickman Molesworth, tho County Court Judge, will act as President of the Court of Enquiry. Craik, driver of the passenger train, has died through injuries received by the collision, A list giving the names of 23 persons seriously, injured has been published, and many others are slightly injured. ■ Everything tends to confirm tho frightful nature of the shock. Trucks were heaped upon one anotler for a distance of twenty feet, and tho tenders were on top of the engines. The scene was ono of desolation, and the stato of the injured most pitiful until assistance arrived, this not being till four hours had elapsed, Bicldle, Warribeo stationmastion master, confessed his responsibility for tho catastrophe' The staff system is, it appears, partially in abeyance on Victorian lines.
Accounts of the Sunbury disaster state that the explosion was' terrific, several trucks being smashed, and the firebox weighing half a ton blown a distance of 300 yards. Kuinors are current that Mr Berry will shortly relinquish the portfolio of Postmaster General, retaining only that of Chief Secretary.
