The following curious incident happened at the lira :;t Lusliy's Music Hall a short time ago:— '■ Mr Crowder, one of tlio proprietors of the hall, possessed a favorite tabby and tortoiseshell cat, which was well known to the frequenters of the hall. The cat had a family of four kittens, which she was allowed to keep in a basket at the rear of the stage. Soon after the lire was discovered the eat was seen rushing about frantically. Sho several times attempted to make her way down the corridor in the direction of the stage, but each time she was beaten back by tho smoke. At last she seemed to pluck up courage, and making another run she was lost to view amidst the smoke. Presently she reappeared with one of the kittens in her mouth. This she laid carefully down near her master's feet in the small hall, which the fire had not touched. Again she rushed through the smoke, and again reappeared with a kitten, and this manoeuvre she repeated the third time, She was now apparently half blinded and choked by the smoke she had passed through, and it was thought that she would be content; but she seemed unable to rest while she knew one of her kittens was still in danger; and, giving a look at the little struggling group on the floor, the cat, evading someone who tried to stop her, once more clashed clown the corridor towards the seething mass of flames, which by this time had enveloped the stage and the lower end of the hall. Her return was anxiously awaited, but she did not come back, Afterwards, when examining the ruins, some of the firemen came across the charred and blackened remains of the mother and kitten lying side by side where the fire had overtaken them,"

A Gorman who has been a teacher in England has published a striking book in which he says that English private schools are the most inefficient educational institutions in Europe, What with holidays and the time spent in examinations, and lost at the beginning and end of the terms he reckons that the actual working days in a year are reduced in most middle class schools to 135, Tho teaching and discipline are bad; the masters are frequently changed, and are so badly treated and ill-paid that they become the merest drudges and can take no personal interest in their work,
