The home team players did not receive any notification of the intended i visit of the up country team (owing to ; a '{letter miscarrying) till Thursday miming.- The Secretary immediately i wired to. Tinui that.- a. team could not i be got itogether;; Owing to the distance i bet ween, Ifiuji imj&Eangdale the telei gram did not reach them in time, and the Whareama men arrived in Masterton 1 in the evening. ' Rather. than disappoint their opponents the match committee made V diligent hunt aud got together ten men, the visitors haying to play the. samo number, owing to their- being disappointed at the last moment by Messrs Mackay and Chamberlain'. Mr H. Elder captained the country men, and Mr P. Harrison acted, in like capacity for the Masterton team,, Messrs J. Fitton and Jnri. Macara officiating as umpires. Play was commenced about 1.30 p.m. Harrison won -the toss.and took the field, the visitors facing the bowling of Bethurie and the Masterton skipper. Very little stand was made, the whole team being disposed of for 36, Sleeman being fop score—not out, 7. Masterton then want in and made a fair start, the second wicket falling for 20; but after that no stand whatever was made, a wicket falling for almost every run, At the fall-of the* eighth wicket only two'runs were required to top the score of their opponents, and the game became : quite -exciting; great interest being taken in it: by-a' goodly number of spectators who .were present, among tfiiom ; we noticed His ; Worship the Mayor, But ,the .-Fates were against I the home team, and the last wicket went down with the one ran behind that of thrWhareama men. Bethune played well for his 13, Harrison coming next with 1. After rolling'tho ground . .the visitors went in for their second ' innings and ran up D 3, the principle 1 1

contributors being E. and A. Elder, the former, run out, 13, and the latter 9, With 55 to: get to win, the Mastertonmen went in with the determination to do oi' die, and it certainly looked very much as if they were going to die, for, singularly" enough; Messrs McKenzie, Harrison, and Hathaway were caught off Chapman's first over, The former put one up a tremendous height, which was well taken by Warren, and the other twomanaged. to put the leather nicely in the way of the field. Bethune and Iggulden then: got together and made things decidedly lively, till the latter, got run out after making G, and his partner immediately followed, after putting together a well played 17. Thon the stumps began to go again till Isitt and Williams got together, the former running his score up to 8, Speculation now began to run high as to whether the required number would be got by time (5,30), but* the last wicket' fell for 41 just one minute before time, thus leaving the Whareama men winners' by 13 runs. Hearty cheers by each of the teams finished up a most pleasant game. The following are the scores. J Whareama.—First innings, j . A. Elder, o Bethuno 1 Chapman, b Harrison .3
