COUNTY SUSPENSION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—At the risk of wearing tho subject somewhat threadbare I wish to make this explanation in reference to Mr Hathaway's letter in your issue of the 22nd inst, Mr Hathaway states ho asked for the "County roll." Three rolls form part of the records of this office, the valuation roll, the ratepayers roll, and the electoral roll. Mr Hathaway admits that the ratepayers roll is tho one he copied, at a period too after a largo number of' alterations had been made therein by the Council. If Mr Hathaway was instructed to make a copy of the electoral roll why did lie not see that hp got it, and not the rato book, the difference between which a gentleman of his attainments should have readily perceive;!. Mr Welch certainly asked me if lie could obtain a copy of the " list of ratepayers," but did not mention the " electors roll" ut all. It appears to me that the Suspension Oonimittee were not quite clear at the time what list they did require, but having supplied themselves with one that does not correspond with that which, according to the law, should have guided them, an endeavor is being made to cast the blame on the shoulders of the County clerk. I am, tfce., P. G. Moore. 24th March, 1884. the stray horse nuisance. To tiii! Editor.

Sin,—Walking quickly along Church street footpath last evening (the night being very dark and I beins nearsighted) I came right upon the hind legs of a horse, which had evidently been enjoying a nap in the public street. I nearly faimted and the quadruped gave a great bound with alarm, I don't know which was the most frightened! Now had that horse kicked at me and broken my arm or leg I should have claimed heavy damages from the man who had caused it to be a dangerous public nuisance, by turning it out, into the streets instead of keeping it in his yard or paddock. As it is, my nerves have received a shock from which I shall not recover for'many days, if at all, (I suffer from palpitation of the heart), and I trust the borough ranger, instead of merely running stray horses into the pound, will prosecute the owners for allowing the animals to wander at large. Yours &c., H.E.
