FEATHERSTONSCHOOL PICNIC.
The annual picnic of the Featlierston school children yas held on Friday last, the 2-1 st mat.,'on- the Town Belt reserve, and although, two months later than usual, was, without exception, the most successful one yet held, the only'circumstance- that marred the pleasure of the day being a heavy shower that occurred in the afternoon; but through the, kindly forethought of the Committee in providing taupaulin, in case of such an event happening,.no one suffered any inconvenience throifh getting wet. About 500 were on the ground, young and old, Dinner was served punctually at 12 noon, and tea at 3 p.m., the special arrangements carried out this time, for the distribution of viands .were excellent, and while all had plenty, • care' was taken that no waste occurred. Boys and girls races, swings, and all . sports of kinds took place Wughout the day, and all appeared well pleased witlx their holiday.
In the evening a ball took place at the Oddfellows Hall when about 200 Were present, and dancing kept up until nearly 12 o'clock, Mr Parker presided at tho piano. •; The .refreshmentdepartment was capitally managed and everything passed off without a hitch, After the dance, the remains of the provision, cakes, <fco,, : so liberally supplied, were disposed of by friendly auction. ..
Great praise is due to the members of the: Committee • and especially the ladies, viz., Mesdames MacShane/MacFarlane, M'Dougal,'Matthews, Riddick, and the Misses Donald and Ohrystal, the latter young lady being most energetic in her endeavors to please and
make the children comfortable and happy. •.
I must not omit to mention that the cause that fflade this picnic so successfull was the liberality with which provisions were given by the parents and towns-people, this time, if anything, more So than before, beside a sum of about £2O being collected in subscription.
