Tho volcanic disturbance of Mount Krakatoa began early in August last, culminating on the 26tli. At tho beginning of July, «cone'from 8000 ft to 10,000 ft high, by estimation, not marked on the chart, )ml situate near the Kanischatka river, supposed to be inactive if not entirely extinct, suddenly split in two, emitting imtaense quantities of lava, which poured down its slopes. This phenomenon was not, however,; accompanied by any:very great local disturbance. Mount Sivilucli (of Keith Johnston's map), the highest peak of the ' Kamschatkan range, 17,000 ft high, was in active eruption throughout the whole month of July,
