CORRESPONDENCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln his letter published in your issue of the 18th, Councillor MeCardle states the Suspension Committee has clearly been " had either wilfully or by mistake," in the matter of the copy list of ratepayers which was obtained from the County office. Prior to the issue of that date coming out Or MeCardle was put in possession of the acts of the case, and it is to be regretted he has not taken steps to place the matter in its true light before the public, after making use of the expressions above mentioned. These are the facts, and I relate them in vindication of my own share in the matter:—The Suspension Committee employed Mr Hathaway to obtain a list of the County ratepayers, That gentleman attendod at the County office for the' purpose; asked for, and obtained, the use of the documents he required. It now transpires that what he copied was the list of names on the rate book, and not those on the' electoral roll. I have 110 distinct recollection of these circumstances; but feel confident that I supplied him with what he ashed for, I trust this explanation will show that there was no wilfulness on my part, and that if the Committee has been " had," as Cr MeCardle puts • it, the fault is their own for not securing the list they wanted.—l am, &c., F. G. Moore, County Clerk.
