The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 1884. FROM MASTERTON TO TINUI.
Our fetetioir: contemporary htr ] written a glowing eulogy on the beaut; and fertility of theHVhareama district and a lament on the watched road tha connects it with Masterton, This roa< is an indifferent one and will remain si till such timeas the unmetalled portion; of it are covered. Owing-to tin absence of metal between Taueru anc Tenui it is a good summer, but a bac winter- road, and as' during the -past twelve months we have had more winter than summer weather, the road has been less serviceable than usual. Anyone who may remember, the:road from Masterton to Tinui ten years age will be less apt to cavil at its present state which is incomparably superior to its former condition, Still as we have frequently pointed out there ought to be a good metalled road to the Wliaveama, and thanks to the exertions of the County there promises to bo one at no distant date. Every effort is being made to metal and bridge it under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, and a considerable slice of the Oounty rate is'being applied to its naintonance, We should have thought ihftt an advocate; of county suspension ivould hare scarcely been a friend to ;his road, Its maintenance depends mthe county rate. The Gastlepoint Board are not prepared to maintain it, ind' the -feeling. On. the..,Masterton 3oard is .adverse to it. .Practically, he countyiis.the best and only friend f this road. It is all very well saying h our contemporary does, that, the oMyjought to provide for it, Shifting to a body that will
i. .t accept it, is no remedy. Tho Government, with respect to providing for this road, is like the Road Boards . —a bird in. tho bush, The County is tho bird in hand, doing the work .which our contemporary desires to'see .accomplished./...When the birdiniandgdes, wo venture to prophecy..tliat; the Maatertoh-Tinui line will be a harder road to travel than it is now, Of course, as the county is doine; the work, the road is, m : the eyes of our contemporary, a monument of engi noering bungling, foolhardiness/ aud incapacity. We have always noticed in the Wairarapa, that those who' know least about engineering matters express tho strongest opinions upon tlrem. .
