SPORTS AT GREYTOWN.
The Amalgamated Friendly Societies Sports in Greytown on St. Patrick's Day were most'successful, notwithstanding that the day was somewhat , spoiled, by the rain in the afternoon, which prevented a great many from attending. The .day -was • beautifully fine in the morning,' and the procession of Friendly Societies whs a very good one, although the and- Odd-felMs-i were the' only- ones to* take . part. The procession left the. Foresters' Hall shortly after.lo o'clock headed by the Greytown Private Brass Band, | which alsO' played .during, the, day. { It bore the beautiful banner of Court < ; Wairarapa, AiO.F.; followedby the J | representatives of floßin'Hood aud , ILjtUe;John,, on horeebijckj}g 1 officers of both orders wore the ensignia
of their order, the " Oddfellows bearing the emblems kindly lent by the Masterton Lodge,..., The procession certainly was a most attractive one. After' marching through the Mainstreet, tlio Sports' ground was visited, when the business of the day commenced, : There were very, good entries for each event, and but for the rain, a splendid day's sport would have been the result. Messrs Skeet and Msgniro made most efficient judges, Messrs Tocker and Cameron as starters also gave general satisfaction, and Messrs Udy, Hirscbberg and Cameron were the handicappers, and from the high opinions passed upon the handicaps, they ought to feel very well satisfied in filling this most unthankful position with such credit to themselves. Mr Fuller and Mr F. Maxton had a hard day's work as Treasurer and Secretary, and filled their positions with entire satisfaction to all concerned,-. The ground showed that the Committee had not been idle,; for from a very rough paddock a very good course had been made, and not without a good deal of trouble.
