MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening Prosautflis Worship the Mayor, Crs Price, Sapper, Chamborlain, Johns cm, Casolberg, Williams, Perry, and Horou. Tho miniitoa of tho previous meeting were read and confirmed; and correspondence read, sorrow of ciuritame institutions, A loiter was road from tho clerk ol the tho Cavorshain Borough Council, uri>iu» Hint Ihe M.H.B for Wnirarapa North brim before tho Government tho desirability of making substantial endowments from the Wneto Lands of the Crown fur the support of hospitals and charitable institutions. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Cnsolberaj, seconded by the Mayor, that tho loiter bo received and laid on tho table for futuro consideration, WOOI SCOUItING NUISANCE. Another lottor was reooived from Iho Secretary of the Masterion Swimming Club, staling that since the lust meeting of the Council a large amount of slush had been emptied into tho river, which, on ono occasion, was in a filthy s'ale. Cr Williams reported having interviewed Mr Cohier upon the nuisance complained 4, who btated his willimniess to remove his works if the Council thought a serii'tis nuisance was being created, ~. Tho; Mayor proposed mid Cr Perry seconded, That tho Comtnit'co have power to withdraw the permission to continue the woiks, if thought desirable, -Carried. JlltS EWINGTOII's BEQUEST, Mis Ewinglon wrolo asking tlint the Council employ her horso and cart in return for heavy rates paid by her. The letter was laid on tlio rablo for consideration on somo future date. WORKS COMMMITTKE IIKPOHT. Tho Committee lep.ottd receiving tho Ovoisoor's statement as follows:-"Mr Baumbcr is gottiug on slowly bui satisfactorily with the Villa street contract. No labor has been employed by me since my last report, and I hnvo principally been employed spteadinj; meial in Villastreet." The Coinmiiiee resolve that the Council be recommended to undeitalio the woik asked for by lesidents in Railway road, provided such residents contribute- one-third of the total cost, which was not to exceed £2n. Tho report as read was adopted. QUEEN STIIEKT. Cr Gapper thought that the largo stones in Queen-street should bo raked off as the road was very rough. Cr Heron thought such action was not necessary. No motion was taken on tho question, ani the matter dropped. Cr Williams seconded. i Cr Heron moved as an amendment, ' that the Clerk's explanation bo uu-upieil ' as satisfactory, and that no fu IW st-'ps ' be taken in the matter, The Mayor seconded. Cr Prico spoke in favor of the furinnmotion, as ho thought it would ejvu more satisfaction to the Clerk.—The nrueud nietit was put and lost. Cr Caselbei'!.' moved as.an amendrneiu to his former motion, That a committee ' consisting of the Mayor, and Crs Price, • Perry, unci the mover, bo appointed I" make inquiries into the matter. Cr Gapper Btated that several lotters had been received from Mrs Hacktr recently, statins; her ■vilhne.nesi t" subsidise a section nl land to the Council to assist in miking certain roads in the neighborhood of her residence, He thought it was quite limo the C>uncil took the question into consideration. Crs Caselberg moved that Mrs Hacker's i original offer bo laid before tho Council at its nest meeting. The Mayor seconded.—Curried. Tho Council then adjourned.
