CORRESPONDENCE.

' « : '■> To the Editor. ' . Sir,—Li looking over your paper of ' Saturday I saw a letter signed W. ? Easthope, Hon. See. of the Masterton Fire Brigade, re new bell tower and r another (ire bell. The writer of the ! letter referred to seems rather to desire to bring out what he would m\y more ' under the spirit of bounce than common sense and fair argument.. I am of opinion that the alteration of the present hell is not needed, nor can I 1 look at such insults being thrust at •' persons in any administrative position ■ in -such a furious manner as that J which I consider to be set forth iii Mr " Eiisthope's letter, and I question much, 5 although he " says what he does" about > the Brigade, if the majority of those • men whose services are at all times so > readily given when required, would ! coneur with him in many of his state* ■ ments, Bounce is not the duty of the , Secretary of any Society, nor should 1 abuse or insults be hurled by such " persons toward those who have been ' placed in local administrative positions, or toward any others, I may observe that almost as a rule of late the most of the fires that have happened in Masterton have been within the sight of the fire hell, and consequently 1 needed but little alarm or noise of a very heavy character. I think, too, • that the insurance companies should 1 give their attention now to those matters, and contribute more largely , to them than they do. And why is it the Secretary of the fire brigade takes such a foreground 1 To me he appears to assume the character of public dictator; but we are not open for such an officer, I think if he knew what common courtesy was in spirit and life he would have refrained from attacking a gentlemanlike Mr Lowes, wliose public and private character, as well as that oi his family, are entitled to our respect, and we might wish there were many more such settlers in our midst. They are kind-hearted as neighbors, and ever ready to do good, if required, to those around them; and lam sure that Mr Lowes' character, if viewed in the respective positions he fills, stands—far superior in every respect to man who only grovels through life in a half sleepy manner, and under a hazy ■■ cloud of ideas misrepresents men and things to his own discomfiture. And, sir, I would say that in calling on the public in this matter of fire bell alteration, I think Mr Easthope should have thought, as respects the subscription list, the recent calls for one thing and another had pressed rather hard on the pockets of the public, some of whioh calls could not be well refused. How-. ever, sir, I am convinced that the man who indulges in too much bounce has but little common sense, consequently sound argument and discretion is not to be expected from him, lam, etc., . Thomas William Shutb. P,S,—I think, too, that it was not thetiuty of the Secretary of the fire brigade (as such) to charge the Mayor or. Council with having failed in the performance of their, respective duties, but which, upon good grounds, ho mighlj haye done as a ratepayer, Bufc who 'of what is Mr Easthope to be considered ? Is he "Senior Wrangler" from (-Italml finlloo- II,_T.W,H1 I, _T.W,H ...
