Last evening an infant about three months old, wrapped in a shawl, was left on the door-step of Watson's hotel, The police aro making inquiries into the matter. i RECEPTION OF VOLUNTEER CHUItTON AT WANGANUI, Wanganui, Friday, Volunteer Clmrton, who won the Rifle Championship at Auckland at the recent meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, and other representatives, arrived by the Stormbird to-night, and met with a very enthusiastic reception from the citizens, Between 3000 and 4000 peoplo were assembled on the wharf to] meet the steamer, which stuck on the flats, owing to lowness of the tide, and the representatives walked into town and were met by the Volunteers of all the local companies and two Volunteer bands, who had amalgamated. On crossing the bridge over the river, the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens, presented an illuminated address to Mr Churton, congratulating him and the other representatives on upholding the honor of Wanganui so well; and Captain "Watt, of the Wanganui Rifles, on behalf of the volunteers, addressed a few congratulatory remarks. The proceedings were very enthusiastic, It is proposed to give a banquet to the representatives on Thursday next in tho drill hall.
