The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, MARCH 10, 1884. AMALGAMATION.
We did not expect from the amalgamation proposnla of Or Phillips at the late meeting of the West County much in the way of practical results, but we dicl anticipate a'discussion. Of Phillips
lifts usually been a sort of Ishnuel in the Council, aud his trilobite resolution on tlio present occasion was not likely to catch votes. Still, we thought that Messrs Booth, Bunny, and Buchanan, the leaders of the Council, would have spoken fully and freely on the- broad question of union. We were rather disappointed to find that Mr Booth was not present at the meeting, that Mr Bunny elected to avail himself of the privilege of silence, which, in the Chairmanship of a county meeting is usually more honored in the breach than in the observance, and that, thirdly, Mr Buchanan contented himself by echoing the sentiments expressed by Ci's H, R. Bunny and A. Mathews. We believe that all the Councillors in West County believe in their inner hearts that union would be good for the Wairarapa, but there are strong local prejudices against it, and they do not care to fight them, Of course it would be a grander thing if, instead of giving way to the popular prejudice, they endeavored to remove it, but we must not expect too much magnanimity from them. There is, of course, a certain amount of force in Or H. R. Bunny's argument, that the present is not a favorable time for taking up amalgamation. We are quite disposed to concede this. Our only regret is that an opportunity for ventilating it has been offered [and r-that County West, after arranging a special meeting to discuss the question—bulked it.
