A CONVENT BURNED.
'Clio Convent of the Sisters of Notre : Dame, at Bclloviilc, Illinois, was burnccl at cloven o'clock on the night of sth January, involving a grant loss in life and a loss in property of from .£D,OOO to £7,000. Eivo nuns jumped from a fifth-storey window, and were killed, ono' instantly. Tlio lire was one of the most destructive to life and property that Uollovillo has over experienced. When the ruin# had sufficiently cooled, volunteers went to work to bring out tlio bodies, and a terrible sight was revealed. At times the searchers would find two or three charred masses huddled closely together, seemingly seeking protection against the flames. The deaths num- J bored 2/, of Which 22 wore pupils ami five sisters,. Among the latter was the Sister Superior. The bodies were all near each other, and the Sister Superiors body seemed to bo the centre of a ghastly circle of black remains. The work of.'exhumation was awful, and more tlmn onco stopped 'because of the sickening sensations which overcame the workmen. The Convent was a favorite school, and patronised by Catholic families, pupils being sent there from all parts of the country,
