MASTERTON-: V.: CASTSRTON.
The fourth match between the above Clubs',this season was played at Carterton on Saturday afternoon.in a paddock lent by Mr Yickerstaff, and resulted in another win for Masfcerton by nine runs-on the first innings. Carterton had tlio strongest team they have yet put in the field, ,In the absence of Harrison, McKenzie was elected cap-taia-.of• the visitors. McKenzie. won the toss from Bennett and took the field. Perry'and McKenzie took the bowling for Masterton and quickly disposed of the home team for 15 runs, the latter getting five wickets for four runs, and the former five for eleven. The Masterton men then went in, McKenzie and R. G. Williams facing the bowling of Bennett arid Sandilands, and things began to look rather blue, for the wickets fell very quickly, six being down for nine runs, until Eggulden made a few runs and brought the score above the Carterton total. The innings closed for the magnificent score of 24, Two of the team were run out. McKenzie was past the bowling crease, when his stumps were knocked out of the ground, this having to be done as the bails were off, and the umpire evidently thought they were knocked off by the ball, and he was given" out.- Kennedy also certainly did not got the benefit of the doubt, In future matches it would bo as well if the teams endeavored to get experienced umpires to act, as in the Carterton second innings Bennett was caught off his hands, but he was given not out, and in the second innings of the visitors J, Williams was given out, caught off Ms leg, but the umpire admitted his mistake and the batsman returned to the wicket. Bennett did most damage with the leather, taking five wickets for eight runs, Sandilands securing three for sixteen. With nine runs to the bad Carterton made their second attempt and succeeded in just doubling their first score, Carter getting into double figures by hitting at everything. Mcltenzio and Perry were again successful with the leather, the former getting 7 wickets for B'runs, and Perry 3 for 20. With 22 to get to win the visitors went in, and had three wickets down for seven runs when time was called, and the match ended in a win for Masterton by 9 runs on the first innings, The following are the scores:—
