THE BAD AND WORTHLESS
are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and it is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value. As soon as it had been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was iho purest, best and most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of the country had expressed the merits of H. R, and in overy way trying to induce suffering invalids to use their stuff instead, expecting'to make money on the credit and good name of H. B. Many others started nostrums put up in similar style to H. 8,, with variously devised names in which the word "Hop" or " Hops" were used in a way to induce people to believe they wcro the same as Hop Bitters, All such pretended remedies or cures, no matter what their style or name is, and especially those with the word " Hop" or " Hops" in their name or in any way connected with them or their namo, are imitations or counterfeits. Beware of them. Touch none of them. Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a bunch or cluster of Green Hops on the white label, and Dr Soule's name blown in the glass. Trust nothing else, Druggists and Chemists are warned against dealing in imitations or counterfeits,
A new method of generating electricity has been discovered by Dr Brand of La Roclielle, He lias an electro-generative torch or candlo which yields a current of electricity in the act of burning. It is thus described : It is prepared by making a paste of coal dust and molasses, and moulding it into a stick, which serves as the inflammable wick of a candle, This rod is then covered with asbestos in a thin sheet, and clipped into fused nitrate of potash uutil a good thick coating of tho nitrate adheres, Tho wick being ignited it burns away, and a current of electricity is drawn from the candle by wires inserted into the nitrate and the soaly wick, It is'state] that Dr Brand is experimenting to construct a fireplaco so that' the fuel burning in it will develop fa electric current sufficient to ring electric bells or charge an accumulator; iin'd thus give light also, Tho discovery Is as yet in its infancy, but scientific ! men in Europe think it will lead eventually to great results. .

The exceedingly delicate photographs (colored) on glass, which have come lately into fashion, are produced by fixing a paper photograph upon a cushion-shaped glass with transparent cement, and when it i 3 dry rubbing away two-thirds of the photograph with sand paper. Tho thin film left is then rondcred transparent by soaking in melted paraffiue wax, after which transparent colors aro applied, which appear softened down when looked at from the front. The back ground and heavier portions of the picture are then painted in body color upon the face of another cushionshaped piece of glass, which is afterwards fixed behind the first one.
The art of accurately measuring the force of tho wind or the rate at which it moves is yet far from perfect. Wonderful as has been tho progress of modern weather science in other respects, it has mado but slight advances in anemometry, or wind measurement, , " "We know nothing positively either as,to the pressure or the velocity of tho wind," said Mr J. K, Laughton, in his presidents address before the Meteorological Society (London) at the annual meeting. " There is no exact standard instrument, and observations, whatever may be their absolute value, are not comparable ono with the other." Here is an opportunity for American inventive genius. Lot us have a new and improved anemometer.
