MASTERTON SWIMMING CLUB ANNUAL SPORTS.

Thesis took place at the Waipoua baths yesterday, and though the weathor was favorablo and a good programme had been prepared, tho number of spectators wiiß only about half that of last yean The swimmers of Masterton, too were very backward on this occasion, the greatoat difficulty being experienced in most of the events to obtain the required number of onirics to start the contests. In the absence of tho President and Judjje (Mr W, H. Beetham) who was detained at tho meeting of County Eaßt Council, and of Mr A. R, Bunny, Vice President and Judge, who was also unable to attend during the course of the earlier events, the Rev "W. E. Paige kindly roipondod to tho request of the committee and performed tho duties of Judgo in a very satisfactory manner, He was assisted later on by Mr Bunny, Mr W. T. Grundy also boing pressed into the service. Mr A. Bish acted as timekeeper, Mr W. F. Roydhoufio as handicapper, and the following members of the committee exerted themselves to the utmost to make the affair a success:—Messrs Jago, Maxton. Wickerson, 0. Honnslow, and A, P. Feilding, The following aro the events and tho names of the winners:—

This was a good race till about twenty yards from home when Bailer was out of it, and it could be seen Hounidow had the race. He won by about throe yards, Time Iraia 84$u<u. Williams, 50 yards, S H, Wickerson, 45 yards, also started. In this Messrs Wiokerson, "Williama, and \ Jago merely entered Jor the fun of tho thing, and. to make! a, race as ■ better swimmers would notoome forward and enter. From the long handicaps, however, it was evident 0. Hounslow would havo his work rat out to get first ■:•■ ' to tho winning post. Williams made the ; ■ most of bis start and was soon on tho up stream course, and it was evident that he would make it a very hard thing for any ono to roach home before him. He how- ' evor bad misunderstood tho directions concerning the course ho was to travel and slackened off when he should have pushed on at his swiftest pace, Jago was close behind him swimming with a steady breast stroke and passed him before he discovered his mistake Jago having now obtained the lead, tried his best to keep it, but Hounslow having passed all tho others was not far in the rear, coming up with a powerful side stroke, and 30 yards borne his lust opponent was conquored, and ho won as ho pleased. Time 2min SOsecs. . Mon's Fancy Dive—three entries. This was a very tame affair, and not ono really good divo was performed by the three competitors, J. Hounslow gained first prize, T Jago second. Steoplechnso five entries. This ■ event was ovor a similar course up to last year. Tho competitors had to leap ' a fence make their way through the river across anolhor fence and back to the starting point. W. Harvey got away at the start- find leaped nearly half acrois tho river, coming in an easy winner, C. Hcuuslow second. _ A Boys' Steeplechase was then run (in place of tho boys fancy dive, for which there woro no entries). This was won easily by R. Thompson, J. Gunther second. 100 Yards Swimming Handicap (opon) —Threo entries. A.Thompson,4yds, Ist; .J. Hounslow, scratch, 2nd; T. Jago, 10yds, 3rd. This was n good race between the first two. Mr Jago, who went in tn ' make up the entries, making no struggle for it. In the down course Hounslow had nearly caught up the four yards ho had yielded to Thompson, but on tho up course the latter got tho still water, while tho former had to breast tho current, which though not at all s'vong told against him, and Thompson w»u by about the length of his start. ; •Follow-my-leader—This event took the •place nf the usual Gitasy Pole, and some • dozen boys were led through a variety of amusing evolutions by Mr W. Dixon as leader. Tho lad who followed him the closost was A. Hoskiug, R, Thompson bein« next best, and they wero awarded lat and 2nd prizes. Boys' One Ann Knee—Four entries. A. Vilo Ist; F. Richards 2nd. This was won oasily, tho winnors swimming on their backs, Time- 43i sees. In future races of this kind, competitors should be made to Bwim on their breasts or sidos, which is what was intended by tho Committed (but not expressed) on this occasion, This ooncluded the programme.
