• Wellington, Monday, Arrived—Zealandia, from 'Frisco, The premises, ,of Silver and Co,, Colonial Merchants, of Sim's Court, Cornhill, London, were destroyed by fire on the 16tb.
January, 17. The Reformatory ship Clarence was burned in the river Mersey on Jan. 16. All hands were saved. The iron and steel workers of Great Britain have been notified by their fellow craftsmen of America,that agents from the United States will shortly be in England to get workmen, and they hope that no British workmen will assist in defeating their brethren in America.
The jury in the case of W, M. Wolfe, now on trial in London, for unlawful possession of explosives, disagreed, and were discharged. Mail advices received in London from China, state that several Chinese bankers havo committed suicide owing to the unsettled political situation, and deplorable state of the money market Miss Hogarth, the surviving executrix of Charles Dickens, has taken steps to prevent the publication in England of the novelist's letters to his solicitor, on the ground that they were never intended'for publication. Lord Lytton's biography of his father meets with no sale in England, because it is said the price is too high, and the' work too bulky. Schuzler, the explorer of equatorial Africa, is reported, dead. On the 16th January Mr Gladstone issued a circular to the Liberal members of the House of Commons requesting, their attendance at the opening of Parliament on February sth, as it is the desire of tho Government to submit at as early a date as possible proposals of much interest and importance:
The marriage of Prince Louis, of Buttenbury, with one of Queen Victoria's grand-daughters, is fixed for April 15th.
Sensation is caused by a; bequest of .£500,000 made by a wealthy London lady to Popo Leo XIII. Rumors of Fenian plots are heard in London on every hand. IRISH AFFAIRS. John Daly,. M.H. ■ foi* Cork, has suddenly did so owing to the 'slight inflicted by :Mr Chamberiainj'President of Board of Trade, who, wishing to fill a vacancy in a Government office here, asked Mr Parnell to nominate a suitable person. Edward Harrington, a solicitor, and proprietor of the Kerry Sentinel, who in June last was sentenced to six months imprisonment on account of the publication of a treasonable placard, was released on January 6th, His term of imprisonment having expired. Bailiff Lims, while returning from the Tultamore Law Court on January 9th, was fatally shot by an unknown person*
