WHAREAMA v MASTERTON. The long-talkecl.of matoli between tlie above teams camo off at Langdale yesterday. The MastertohJeam left on Monday evening in buggies and on horseback, and reached Langdale after a pleasant journey, about half past nine. One half the team were put up at Langdale. and the other at lea, being most hospitably entertained by Messrs Elder and Mr Mackay. The Langdalo .cricketers had prepared an 'excellent pitch, and play began about ten o'clock on Tuesday morning, the visitors expecting to get a good "drubbing" at the hands of the country players. Messes Chamberlain and Harrison captained the teams. The latter won the toss and took the .field. Tho bowling of Perry and the Masterton "skipper" prove altogether too good for- their> opponents, no stand whatever being made; the former taking six wickets for one run, and the whole team being disposed for the total of 12. Mastertcn then went in and, though frequent changes were made in the bowling, the score was run up to 82. O'Connor batted splendidly for his first 25 not out, playing the straight balls and hitting freely at anything loose. Harrison was the only other to get into double figures, which he did by careful play. Master S. Minifie, who went in to make up the team, rather surprised his "opponents' by making a fine hit to square leg for four, Chapman proved most successful with the lca'her,-. taking five wickets
for foui'fccen thus, H. Elder getting the other three. The teams then adjourned to the woolshed, part of which had been divided off, carpeted, and nicely decorated with evergreens, where a sumptuous repast had been laid out. Full justice having been done- to the good things provided, a return was made to the cricket field, and the home team we nt in for their second innings. It was expected that a much better stand would be made,.but the second attempt was very little better than the first; the bowling of Messrs Perry and Harrison again proving too good, the total only reaching 38, the trundlers the honors by taking four wickets each, the visitors thus winning by an innings with 30 runs to spare. Hearty cheers wore then giW by each of the teams, snd after partaking of some refreshment a start for home, which was reached about nine o'clock. The whole of the MasWton team expressed themselves highlj pleased with the trip, and speak in gratified terms of tho hospitality they rWived at the hands of Messrs Elder W Mr Mackay, wishing for the lim\ to come when it would again be tbeii turn to visit their country opponents, Near the finish of the first innings oi the Langdale team, O'Connor, who yas wicket keeping, received rather a nasty blow under the eyo, and J, Williams, who went on to relieve him during'the second innings, also got a severe blov on the face, cutting his nose am! blacking both eyes.
