SENTENCE-OF DEATH.
','■' ...',. ' Puhedin, January 21. • > The second trial of William Pearce for murder commenced to-day. The iCrown Prosecutor ordered two -jury--to/statid? aside, and: prisoner's counsel, challenged-Vtwcivo- jurymen. The defenco to-day will be an entirely now one—that the deceased accidentally inflicted the wound on herself, an open knife being carried by Pearce. "''■■. . Later. The second trial of William Pearce for the murder of the woman Hancock was held to-day before Judge Williams and a jury. The'same witnesses were examined, and the prisoner was again defended by Mr D. M.Stuart. The jury retired at 4.26 p.rn., and after an hour, returned into Court with a verdict of guilty, accompanied by a strong recommendation to mercy.
