Lord Lome delivered ii long lecture at Birmingham on December sth on Canada and its products, He particularly praised the salubrity of the climate, and said that fevers which were too common in the United (States, were unknown within the boundaries of the Dominion. He hauled Canada as a field for emigration, and expatiated uiion the mai'vollous progress made by the various towns, In conclusion he said—"With the Dominion of Canada and Australian colonics in close relation, England need never fear her proud position in the world will be shaken or questioned," The Marquis also read a paper before the Colonial Institute, London, in the course of which the following remarks occurred:—" Information in regard to prospects in life in tlic colonies should k given in schools? ij the information could be readily obtained, I.t is difficult to believe that so many people would remain here without occupation. The area of Australia and Canada is so vast, the vertility of the soil so re iiuirkeble, and the rapid increase of their population so certain, that within the lifetime of children of gentlemen present their numbers will be equal to ours, and in another century they will be greatly superior to us in men p4 wealth. Our colonies give the foreigners an apparent advantage over us, It is still our policy to remain their closest allies. The lirsti step to keep them in : lliame i" to work with them, pushing their commerce."
