The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 1884. THE FINANCIAL POSITION OF THE COLONY.
It is difficult to grasp the financial position of the colony without wading through myriads of figures, which, by their intricacies, are apt to mislead the anxious inquirer, The question of whether New Zealand is financially sound has frequently been discussedwith very unsatisfactory .results, -One section of our political .'pundits hold that the colony cannot prosper till' it works its present enormous debt up to fifty millions, while another maintains that our prosperity depends upon the reduction of our. liabilities. Our liabilities are so great that they can now only be counted by tens of millions, According to Major Atkinson' we send away two and a half millions of money annually in payment of interest on borrowed money; but according to Mr. Montgomery three and a half millions is the total Pro : bably the truth lies between theso eminent authorities, and three millions may be' taken as the figure, These three millions pay'interest on (1) the public debt of twenty-eight millions,: (2) the harbour and municipal debts amounting to' four milliolis" and (3) the mortgages which our friends' in England hold over properties in New ; Zealand which arp variously estimated, at from sixteen to twenty millions. This output of- three millions : for interest is further augmented by the' balance of imports over exports, which occasions another two millions to start homeward bound out of the colony. Against these five millions going'oftrf we may set down one million as coming in from loan and two millions as being introduced annually through private channels. • This would leave the net balance against New Zealand at two millions. Can wo afford to remit a balance of two millions' annually to England, and if not are we. not going to the bad by our inability to pay our way. If the accumulation of. wealth in New Zealand is advancing at a greater ratio than two millions per annum, we are fairly safe, and if it is not progressing at that ratio our position is a serious one. We believe that the accumulation of wealth in New Zealand is proceeding at a greater ratio than two millions per annum, The land pleared and brought into cultivation year by year, and the increase .of stock and the multiplication of local indnstries are a guarantee to the colony's creditors,, bub still,, it is. evident that we are sorely pushed for money, and if not in a dangerous position we aro at least surrounded by embarrassment?, ■ """—■'■?,"■"■' r-'aa,,, Mr Sandilahds, solicitor, notifies jtha) an application for the' discharge of William Bartlett, of Carterton, a aebtorj will. be made at the Supreme Court', Wellington, j)n /tjie 22nd innfanf.
