CORRESPONDENCE.
\ SBA.THERSTON* BAOE& TOTfiBEDItOB. behalf of tte/Fcatherßton facing Club I have a few words to say : in reply to your lending artido of the 7 5th inst. Bhd " lair Hay's" letter of ■the same'date re protests -in Consolation race. The Stewards, aftor careful consideration of all OTidence, decided, that, although the rider of I Ninette was not altogether without blame, there was not anfflcUat jjroo'f to uphold a charge of foul, riding. I can positively state that; theis decision was unbiassed and independent of outside considerations hinted at by yous Before writing a leading artiolo, bated 1 upon an ex parte statentent itia% by, an anonymous correspondent, it \m&have ,beon but simple justice awnjur play to have heard the other bhJo as well. 'I may say that "the Stewards regret that they did not postpoHO theconsideration of tho proteste, Bo'tU&t a more thorough and searching investigation; could ha?o been madcr afterwards, and more deliberation afforded the matter than was possiWo en the course.' Tho decision of tiie Stewards was naturally received' with disapptfjval by most of those; present, as thera were forty-nine on Tje&tfster tod G&bble in the tolalisator, and fifteen only on Ninette, so that had the Stewards been inclined to submit to outaide pressure they would certainly havo gone with the " crowd. The Stewards had, of course, to reject Evidence of any persons connected with the race, and you can itaapne it was & •difficult and Unpleasant duty they had' to perform. Tta Club havo endeavored to do what was right, rsrd though tbdy cannot ploaso ovtiryom), thby are determined not to he swayed by such braggarts as your "Fair Play," who cause mora disturbances si ft °raoo meeting than all tho res} of the peaplo put together. I am vvrifelHg you this note in reply to' your article, and I havo to state distinctly that tiio Club aro not going to enter into.R news; paper warfare with anyone, be he over so abusive. In oooejiision, I trust that now yon seem to bo aroused yeu will keep as watchful an eye on other Race meetings as you appear to haver dono on, ours. We are only too glad to be made •an example.of, though tindeservedly, if it will lead to tho expurgation of racing in the district; but serve us all alike, whether, large or small'and give us credit for acting disinterestedly in matters of this kind. We aro all liable ' to err, but let it not be said that tho errors, if they dd occur, are intentional,, or that we are biased by unworthy motives, and wo shall be Satisfied Yours, etc., C. HacShanb, Hon,gflc,F,li:a Jauuary sth, 11584, [Tho above letter (1) admife tho 'action : of tho Stewards to have be*n hasty j (2} does not contradict the allegation that some of tho Stawords bad money on .'the event which; tbej . were called upon to adjudicate. U ' proof were needed that our comments were called for, this offieial communicatiOii gives' ft. sv*o oan only trust that tho, error in jadgment which was raids «ut this' occasion will not to rßpeafed, .
