The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1884. THE WELLINGTON WOOLLEN MAUFACTURING CO.
It was thought that the question of a site for the works, of tho proposed Wollington Woollen Company would bo decided on its merits, that it would, practically be referred to aCommittce of Experts, who wero not interested in any particular locality. Shareholders in tho Wairarapa would, wo vonturo to say, willingly have accepted such an arbitramorit," but judging from' the following circulars, which, .havo been issued to all country shareli6ldors, tho question of site is to ho effected not on its merits, but by a canvass for proxies, Tho first circular wo received ran as follows; ' _ Wellington, January 2nd,, 1884. Me Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Com-, pany, Limited, - •' ' Deaii Sin, —It is important in tho intercats of shareholders that tho question of silo) another matters in connection with tho Company, should bo discussed at tho first meeting, to-bo held on the 15th inst. As the brokots floating the company wo are interested in having the fullest expression of all our clients' views on those matters, and we will feel oxtremely obliged by your signing tho enclosed proxy form and getting' same witnessed and returned both to-us positively by first mail in enclosed onvolope. It is not necessary to fill up any of the blank spaces unless you specially desiro to do bo, the mote aot of signing and having your signature witnessed by any person being quite sufficient.' Should any other proxy form bo Bent you it will not be neoeseary to return more than the present one.'. Yours truly, •Wiliusison&Co, Brokers to tho Company;' N.B.- In order to allow the proxy to vote it will be necessary to pay/before tho 15th iuot., the allotmonfc call of -2a 6d per share due on the 10th inst. Yesterday' a 'second circular reached us as follows: ■•■ The Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Com. pany, Limited, Please sign tho encUsed proxy papor, filling in tho name of ahyporson (beiuc a shareholder in the company), you may wish : to aot for you in case of absence or loavo it blank to bo used at' tho discretion of the direotors, .•■.•■ Charles St, Baube,: "• Secretary, pro. torn. '• This proxy papor must bo returned to .tne Company'torty-eight hours previous to day of meoting,:r .■•••■'.■:■ >■'■: ■■■.-. Shareholders aro at a loss to know whether tho brokers or the directors " boss" the' Company. -Both ask for "blank authorities" to bo used at their discretion .without committing themselves tp any course, Before shareholders in the Wairarapa give their proxies in answerto these appeals, they should bo informed (1) what game the brokers are playing; (2) whether tho Provisional Directors are playing any game. "Will the Wellington Press which is singularly or perhaps judiciously silent, help to clear up the mystery, or is it mixed up in ,the " littlo gamo" which is being played, i. Thero was one special foaturo at the Featheraton Race Meeting which we pniilted to report, and. that was the splendid • starting of Mr W. Cundy. No bolter starts were ever .effected on a race' course; and'every body .'must have heon satisfied'on this point. Mossra'Chas, Pownall & Co,, Scrivoners Wellingtonreport; The buainossfor tho month for mortgage investment has been almost without quotation. Money remains in sufficient supply for any looal demand, at tho samo rato, -viz,; 71 to ,8 per cant, but the few transactions that have been negotiated can bo no guide to the real value if any large applications were made. A feeling of distrust as to tho value of New Zoaland securities at presont predominates, unwisely based upon the general existing depression!-and land* owners naturally decline to ..lock-up properties for a tithe of their value, Our advice to them is to withold their requirements, The new line of steamers will' introduce capitalists to this country, which is only to be'investigated to be appreciated,'and wilf, as a natural result, be found during the half of ='the; next, decade to double the value of every aora in it simply because of the privilege of growing grans all the year round is a privilege not enjoyed elsewhere.
John Itoiueril, the poor follow from Blenheim, who was admitted to the Masterton Hospital on Saturday last vflule in an exhausted nude, died this morning, The medical officer reports that the aymptoraß were those of severe shock. Tho deceased is supposed to have been witbont friends or means, and the cost of his interment will probably-fall on tho Hospital Committee. . A meeting of the directors of the Kuripuni Public Hall Company •• bole place last evening at tho Hall, Present: Messrs Williams (chairman), Renall, Russell, and T, W. Shnto. The minutes of tho last meeting were road and confirmed, The balanco shoot was also read and ordered to be audited. : # was resolved that a general meeting of tho shareholders should ba . shortly held.': Mr Shute proposed that tho hall bo lot on leaso for ouo or three years,' Tho motion was' Rgrecd toand.the meeting-adjourned. Onr Groytown conlomporavy has just published in an excollont almanac what it calls "a fow facts." Tho first ono of iti series is perhaps tho least startling, yet it is a decided surprise.
