CASTLEPOINT RACES.
New Year's Day was celebrated yesterday at Castlepoint by a race meeting.. The morning, as in Mastertertou, was fine, but about 10 a,m, the rain descended and somewhat dispirited the meeting. But rain, hail and thunder wont stop races, and the programme went through without a hitch, A niilo course was laid off on the sand flat, and all the events were this distance. Between two and three hundred spectators wero present. Mr Clifton acted as judge, Mr Schotield as starter, Mr J, A, Perry as clerk of the scales, Mr Sheath as secretary and treasurer, and Messrs Clifton, MoHutchon and Perry as Handicappers, The first event in the programme was the
Castlepoint Hurdles, Of2ssovs. Sheath's Zulu ... ' ... 1 Taylor's Stag 2 Carswell's Ouida ~. 3 Three entries, Zulu won easily. Hack Hurdles, ; OflOsovs. Green's Protestant ~. 1 R.Siiaw'sSatan... ;,. 2 Sheath's Fishhook ... 3 Five entries. Carswell's Magurka and T. Powers Araby Bey, also ran. Maiden Plate, Oflssovs. W. Geange's Harebell... 1 Carswell's Gipsy Warning 2 Carswell's Vixen ;.. 3
Three entries, Harebell went to the front at once and kept the lead throughout tho race, Maiden Hack Race. Ofßsovs. D, McDonnell's Raugiora 1 Carswell's Moll Bawn ~,' 2 Six entries, Castlepoint Stakes. Of 208OVB. E. Clifton's Doncaster... 1 Carswoll's Fleetwood ... 2 McDonnell's Whitau ... 3 Three entries. This was the race of the day,{Doncaster winning by a neck. Flat Hack Race. OflOsovs. Carswell's Tibbit ~. 1 Carswell's Vagabond ... 2 Mason's Banker... ... 3 .Six entries. This race lay entirely between the first two horses. Consolation Handicap, Of 12 BOVS.
