The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1883. THE REPRESENTATION OF WAIRARAPA NORTH.
Tiie numerous ripples which have latterly troubled the usually placid waters of North Wairarapa politics may'be regarded as a prelude to the general election of next year. Though other causes tend to produce them, the coming campaign ia clearly in the minds of those who are busily engaged in fanning them. At the last general election the Radical party succeeded with some trouble in obtaining a. candidate to lead them, Mr RENALL.was the fly who was tempted into their parlour on that occasion, but it may be taken for granted that " once bit" with him is "twice shy," and that twelve months hence another fly will have to be baited. There will probably be less difficulty i.i finding a tenant for the Radical parlour then than two years ago. Several flies are spoken of as only being too eager to respond to the invitation of the spider. Opinions differ as to who will be put up to securo that political fight which is deemed to be essential to the welfare of the district. To a great, extent the eyes of the public are fixed upon the President ■: and Vice-Presidents of tho North 'Wairarapa ' County Settlers' Association, and we should not be at all surprised if the Radicals picked their candidate from the trio. Mr Hawkins is freely spoken of as the coming man. Of course it is objected that he is a rnnholder, but this Would not be fatal to his prospects if he were prepared to spend money. The Radicals would receive him with open arms and change the war cry against large landed proprietors which waved on their banners at the last election. ..';■ Mr Hawkins, however, has virtually; pledged himself not/ to come.: forward next year. Very many people, regarding all political promises as mero'pie crust, do not accept this assurance. They regard liis coming forward as,a certainty. - lor :dur..own : ;part V ;:we voga.ro! Some seven or eight years ago when it was supposed that Mr Bonny would accept a Government billet, the Grey Ministry selected: Mr Lowes as: his: successor.'; This arrangement fell through, but, it, brought Mr Lowes before, the public; as a'man who was likely to take'the'' position of a legislator, He is probably \ the only candidate who could • be: brought forward by the Radical party! against Mr & Beetham with a show; of success. Of course it is early yet to discuss an - election which will not' be held, for another year, but a good; many men in this district.are already' making pjans for the campaign. It; may be assumed with certainty that; there will bo a contest on this occasion,; though, necessarily, there is a consider-' able amount of doubt and difference: of opinion with respect to the men who will be brought forward to do battle.

The information is laid by Sergeant McArdle, who, we understand, on hearing that' the accused was trying to change a suspicious cheque, took him into custody, and found upon .searching-him that a cheque, as described' was in one of his pockets, but was torn into small pieces. Korth will probably bo brought 'up before. Mr Wardell this afternoon. L We hear that tho services of the Masterton Vopinteer Band have been engaged for tho Presbyterian picnic on New Year's %■ '.
