The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1883.
Messrs Owen, Schroder and Co.'a new advertisement appears on our third page today. Wo aro sorry to have to chronicle the untimely death of the Featherston Cricket Club. Committee meetings and general meeting have been called, but all in vain, The oil cricketing spirit seems to have died out and left not a vestige behind. Wo remembor the 1 time,'not many years ago, when Featherston could raise a team good enough for anything in tho Valley, but what, alas, has become of these bold and chivalrous spirits 1 The advent of tho railway seems to have knocked them into "cocked hats," and the influx of new blood and new ideas seems to have beon too much for them, If the Featherstomans do not stir themselves shortly and striko off that feeling of lethargy, so aptly described by the poet as "Istill so gently o'er me stealing," they will bo getting lost sight of altogether in this ago of progress. Their School Commitiee and their Racing Club seem to bo the only stirring affairs in the place, if we except the Town Board ranger, and he's no smarter than he should be. We are told that it has been decided to sell the goods and chattels of the Featherston Cricket Club, and wind it up at an early date, The following notes on the weather for the week ending December 21st are contributed by our special:—The past week has been a little more of a summer character than the preceding one. Rain fell on three days, but only in showers; still it may be supposed not pleasing to those who have cut.their grass and have got it stacked. Total rainfall for the week i 5,,.285 parts' of an inch. The barometer mean reading for the week is 29,17 inches, and for the thermometer it is fiOFab. The wind has'been light and variable, and from almost every direction Now we have passed mid-summer day,and up to the present with but a breath of summer weather,
