At a meeting of the Taueru Sobool Committee, it was resolved to celebrate the breaking up for the Christmas holidays, by getting up a treat for the children. As contributions have poured in liberally, the juvenile festival promißea to be a success. Next Friday, the 21st inst, is the day appointed for tho event, The Athletic sports begin at 11 a.m., and •will form tho principal feature in the day's programme. • We understand that Mr Parsons kindly conveyed ■ the prospecting party, which has just been sent out from Masterton, in his brake to the foot of tho ranges, and pointed out to the members of it tho first reef, We are afraid that the weather just yet is unfavorable for the enterprise. The Greytown Cadots fired for prizes at the Battersea range on Tuesday. Twenty five members competed, and Bome very good shooting was done, Corp. Judd and Vol Baillie tied for first place. The prizes will be presented on Friday. Eight of the Greytown Rifles met on Tuesday evening in stewards paddook for judging distance practice. The ordinary- monthly mooting of the Maslerton School Committee waa held last evening, Present—Mesara Boddiugton (Chairman), Galloway, Feist, Hogg, Bapp and'Payton, The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, tlib Treasurer reported a credit balance of £l2 2s lOd. Correspondence was read from the Board, stating that they would advertise again for an assistant master; that the rent allowance of the head master could not be inoroased; that the arehiteot reporteithat a new olass room tor infants was needed, but that the Board could not supply it till the building grant was availablo. From Mr John Kay, thanking the Committee for supporting his application for a bonus. The Chairman drew attention to the fact that tho Secretary of the Board waß dilatory m replying to important lottora. Mr Hogg suggested that a side Bchool should bo established in Masterton to relieve the main establishment, and gave a notice, of motion to consider the advisability of such a school for the next meeting. The head master reported for the past month- No. of children on roll, 509; average attendance, 396, He attributed the low average to aiokness amongst tho children and to the dis organisation consequent on ; the annual examination inking place in October. Tho Chairman roported that a pupil teacher was required to replace Miss Baillie, and was instructed to apply lor one. The following accounts were passod for payment P. Hourigan 7s 9d, W. Sellar £'3 19s Gd, D. Pickering 6s, 6. M, Wood : £l Is, Mrs Shepherd £2los, and stationery £2 la. The Chairman reported that Mr Blair, the Chairman of the Board, had forwarded some handsome Christmas cards as presents for the junior classes in the school. The Committee acknowledged tho gift by a vote of thanks. The head muster reported the collection of £26 IBs 3d for school prizes and school library. Messrs Galloway and Heron were appointed visiiing members for the .ensuing month.

The annual picnic in connection with the Masterton Wesleyan Sunday School is announced to tako place on Boxing Day in Mr Billiugton's paddock. A good nivusiment in the shape of ten acres of freehold land near Wellington is advertised in another column to bo let or sold.
