The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1883. SELLING LAND.

Mr Rolleston lias promised early in the coming year to place in the market somo of tho good land in tho Forty Mile busli. There are now in this district a considerable number of working men who may be expected to make good settlers if they can be induced to purchase allotments, There is a staff of railway navvies, a considerable number of roadmen who have been attracted to Wairarapa North from other parts of the colony by the numerous contracts let by the County Council and Road Boards, and there is a brigade of bushfallers. From these ranks tho right material for settling bush lands ought to be obtainable, A suggestion recently made by Mr Hawkins is, in connection with the proposed sales of land, well worthy of consideration, viz,, that full and accurate details should be published of every- section offered to the public. This idea is not altogether a new one. Ten years ago when Mr H. Burn? was Provincial Secretary, he employed a clerk in the Land Office who happened to be an ex-journalist to write up a graphic description of the lands whioh the Provincial Government were about that period putting into tlie market. The Provincial administration had its faults but - it understood how to sell land Nowadays .the, Waste Lands Board gives an intending purchaser the name of a block* the number of a section and its acreage to the fraction of a perch,

but this is not; what the intending purchaser wants. He cannot tell from meagre Btatistics whether the land is of a character to suit him, It may be said why does he not go and see it for himself, A working man if he took a fortnight's holiday to explore any particular block which might be in the market, would be compelled to spend in his prospecting tour a sum equal to two or three years rental of the section he would probably select, > TliiaV he cannot afford to do and in : many instances he buys land without seeing it, and finds out when too. late that the character of the land arid timber as well as the accessibility of the section are not what hehad expected them to be. No pains should be spared to bring under the notice of the working men now in this district the characteristics and advantages of every section which may be put in the market. We are aware that Government departments are more or less creatures of red tape and slaves of precedent. Still the ' Provincial Government ten years ago in selling land studied public convenience nioro than office formulas, and wt do not see why the experiments which were then successful should not be repeated.

The meeting convened at Carterton on Saturday last to constitute a Kifle Association was but thinly attended, but this was in a measure due to cricket and other engagements, which prevented volunteers from being present. Wo trust to see the association a success, and all parts of the district working together harmoniously to secure this result, It is evident, however, that unless members of the various corps display a somewhat livelier interest in it than they have so far exhibited, the task of working it up will be an arduous one. . .'

It appoars that private shipping companies give greater facilities to' excursionists from Wellington during the Christmas holidays than the local railway. Mr Hardcastle, 11, M,, of Wellington, haa gono south for a month's holiday. The result was an immediate bolt, the ostler being knocked do #n wdrun over And the buggy considerably damaged, Another buggy was procurod and Carterton reached in lime for the evening service, A quorum not being present the monthly meeting of the Castlepoint Road to have boon hold on tho Bth December waa adjourned until 2 p.m. on Saturday ISth inst.

Settlers in the Castlepoint district will be glad to learn that information has been received from tho Public Works Department that tenders will be called immediately for the erection of the boat jetty at Caitlepoint.

We hour that Mr Tuckey, head master of the Featherston State Sohool, has been appointed by the Board of Governors, principal of tho.llangiora High School, Canterbury, This is a new school about to be started next month, and is in 110 way connected with the Government Schools, Out of eleven applications sent iu Mr Tuckey was unanimously chosen, and in congratulating that gentleman wo may also express a wish for his future prosperity. A fairly attended meeting of persons interested in forming a Rifle Association, was held at the White Hart Hotel Carterton, representatives being present, from all parts of tho district, Major Bunny presided. A long discussion took place, the object of the proposed Association being well voutilalaled, the feeling generally being iu favor of its establishment. It was resolvod that provisional committees bo appointed in each of the Wairarapa townships, to obtain all particulars on the subject, and report at a meeting to bo held, on January sth. At Carterton there is one sensational caso that of "wife anr! at Masterton a charge against a billiard marker of permitting bettinpr in his room may create a little interest, but bnyond this the record will be a brief one. .
