The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1883. PROSPECTING.

The statement made by Mr Parsons at a meeting held lust Saturday, may be accepted as conclusive of tho fact that auriferous quartz is discoverable in tho ranges and that comparatively easy access to tho localities in which specimens have been found, is obtainable by travelling up the Waingawa river. Thero can bo but little doubt that the Waingawa river district is worth prospectins, and it appears tons that the onus of testing the minoral wealth of the hills from which it flows should rest on Masterton. It would not bo a' nice thing if Greytown, taking a lively interest in prospecting, were to have to undertako the duty of prospecting the Waingawa. Greytown, no doubt, will send prospectors up the Waiohine and possibly up tho Tauherenikau rivers, and it will show a poor spirit in Masterton if we are unable to do all that is required up the Waingawa. Unfortunately at the meeting held a few days ago, the cart was put before the horse. The first thing necessary, was to organise a prospecting company, the second, to engage prospectors. In the present instanco a party of four men submitted certain conditions on which they were prepared to take the field as prospectors, and the question before the meeting was practically not the formation of a prospecting company which would be a position to take an independent course of action, but the formation of a company to send out the particular four men who had proffered their services on the terms named by them, It is possible that if a small company had been organised without pledging itself to any person or persons, the Committee representing it might have found it advantageous to select one or more of the four men for'prospecting who had volunteered for this-'work. Ontheotherhand, the Committee might have come to. the

Conclusion that a different set'of men altogether should have been engaged, It 1b obvious that any Company formed should have the option of taking an independent course on a point like this. The arrangements already pro-, posed may possibly result in a satisfactory test being applied to the Bourses' of the Waingawa, If, however, it fails to do so, we hope to see the question of prospeoting in that locality: taken up de iwvo in a business like manner by an adequate sum of money being raised, /a committee being appointed to expend it, and suit-; able prospectors engaged : on tlio m6st favorable terms. Wo hope the summer season will not be allowed to pass without a thorough and exhaustive test being made of the mineral wealth which, we have reason to believe, exists in our neighborhood, Business is not so lively in Masterton, and money is not so plentiful that wo can afford to neglect a'chance of this kind. It is immaterial whetliorthe testis made by a public or private company, or by a private individual. The question which we desire to see solved is the the locality and extent of the reefs from which auriferous specimens have already been taken and certified to by Dr Hanoi Perhaps Mr Donald, Donald, who appears to have a more intimate knowledge of the. Waingawa Keofs'than any other settler, ■ may bo willing to take the public into his confidence and concert with others to promote the general interests of the district,

At the hour appointed for the meeting of County delegates yesterday afternoon, only three were present out of seven required to constitute a quorum, Unpunctuality threatens to be a serious drawback to the utility of this new organisation, Practically it breaks down its discussions. The subject of Waste Lands for example has been takon up by it, and when people are expecting a vote to be taken on the question indicating the sentiments of the delegates, it is deferred to a more convenient season, which, we venture to say, will- never nrrivo. Unless delegates are a little more diligent in attending to their duties, they will fail to accomplish the objects for which they have been elected. They put forth big order papers, but procrastinate too much to arrive at any canclusions.

Grave complaints reach us of traffic mismanagement on our local railway. At the Masterton terminus there is a deficiency of trucks, and even those that are available are detained loaded at the station because there are no truck covers on hand. The goods depot is crowdod and cargo is daily turned away. An insufficiency of trucks is no new thing, and may be excusable during the wool season, but that goods should bo quarantined by tho absence of truck covers, an inexpensive artiele, procurable at a day's notice, shows that the management ia simply incompetent.

Mr Stone, of the Waipoua nursery, is introducing to Maslerton housekeepers this season a new pen, a prolific poa, and ono which bids fair t» command the market. The pod is a stout, strong, business like receptacle, and in it are packed closely a solid compact row of sturdy well flavored peas, We do not know tho name of this mysterious pea but we have sampled it, and find it the best ttll-vound combination of size, weight, and flavor that has as yet come underour notice. A peck of these pods yield about double the weight of peas obtained from ordinary growths,
