MURDEROUS ASSAULTAT CARTERTON.
Last evening betwem seven and eight o'clock, Alexander Awtrson, who was formerly cook for a Pnrkvale road making party, was seen by a man named Edwards to strike his wife, and then stab her in the neck with a pocket knife. Dr Smith was soon in attendance, ordering her immediate moval to the hospital. She bled freely, but the wounds are not considered fatal. While quarrelling with another man Anlerson recently had his eye knocked out by being struck at through a_ window. As will he romembcral, his assailant was sentenced to two month's imprisonment for the assault. The cause of that misfortune and the present offence is attributed to jealousy. Constable Darby arrested the accused early this morning at what was formerly known as the Pioneer Hotel, where, in company with his little boy, he bogged a night's lodging, saying they had walked a long journey.
