UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. ACCIDENT TOTHEu TRIUMPH. Auckland, Saturday. There is very little hope of the Triumph getting off. She is expected to break in two. The officers give conflicting statements as to the cause of the accident, and also as to what took place. A large quantity of cargo was saved.

ELOPEMENT IN CANTERBURY.

A man named McMillan was arros-. ted,to-day for larceny on the arrival of .the train from Oamaru. Accused had eloped with another man's wife, taking with Mm a quantity of goods, for stealing which a warrant had been taken out by tho fair one's husband.

Auckland, Friday.

The steamer Triumph struck on j the south-east side of Tiritiri on the fair way for the lighthouse. She is now on the rocks at foremost watertight compartment. There are twelve feet of water in the compartment, and it is supposed there is a hole through it, but it cannot be ascertained yet. It is believed she can be got off, having gone on. four hours after ebb tide. There are seventeen fathoms astern. The crew are now shifting the cargo aft in hope that she will float. There is seventeen feet of water abaft the fore rigging so that she is hanging by the bow. It was a clear night, though dark. THe pilot left her outside Eangitoto at;.nine o'clock,-and gave the captain the 'course. The steamer was going at eleven knots and struck very hoavily.,. No light has been thrown on the cause of the disaster, as.the course skou]d i have taken her miles away from Tiri, and. the lighthouse Was right ahead of where sho struck. The captain was on the bridge at the time. A vessel has been chartered to go down and takb off the cargo whieli comprises a.quantity of railway iron from London for the South, 14 bales of wool, etc. The Triumph is 1797 tons register, and was built in 1880.
