The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1883. OPENING UP WASTE LANDS.
The Chairman of tho Wairavapa East County announced on Thursday that | shortly some of the blocks of Wasto | Lands in the Forty-Mile Bush would be opened for settlement by the construction of loads—tlrnt the, Hon. Mr Rollesion was now up visiting these blocks with a view to the inauguration of this work, and .that early next year the road making part of the business was likely to be placed in the hands of the County, This statement is about the best answer that could be given to Mr Hawkin's recent proposal to establish local land boards, and following immediately after it comes almost like a doiicke on the project. It is so palpable that a bird in hand is worth two iu tho bush that we venture to predict that the delegates of the Settlers 1 Association will object to. follow Mr Hawkins' lead ill revolutionising our Waste Lands system. We want roads made and land settled in tho Wairarapn, and wo arc p.bout to get what we require. The present method of opening up new country arid peopling it with industrious settlers may not be perfect, but it is immediately effective, and few poople .will be found willing to upset it for tho sake of somo contingent advantages which at the best must be remote in their operation. The visit of Mr KoLLESTON to this district is pro km fatal to Mr Hawkin's new crusade, In J a recent speech tho President of our Settlors 1 Association invoked the presence of'the Minister of Lands, Tho word spoken in jest has proved true, and the majority of settlers in, tho Wairarapa are, wo feel jjure/glad to have Mr Kolleston amongst us, and will cordially support the object of his mission.
