The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1883. A MODEL MINISTER.
In his Department as Minister of Lands Mr Rolleston is a very good model of a Minister. Ho is never weary of going about the country interviewing settlers in remote out districts and ascertaining for himself their needs and requirements. He is thoroughly in earnest in his desire to settlo popu, lation on waste lands under the most favorablo conditions, and throughout the colony it must be admitted that a largo measure of practical success has resulted from his efforts. As a politician he is not a giant, as a parlialiamentary debater he is but mediocro, but tako him away from the Cabinet and the Hoiiso, and follow him in his journies through- the, length and breadth of the colony, and it would bo difficult, to find a more active and wellinformed Minister in the Department which ho has made his speciality. On Thursday next he has arranged to meet the Pahiatua settlers and discuss with them the progress of their enterprising settlement. Pahiatua Owes much to Mr Kollestoh, and he will, no doubt, view the position which it has already attained with some considerable degree of pride, and with a sympathetic desire to still further promoto its interests. Mr Rolleston is essentially the Minister for working settlers, He has their confidence, and gives them his sympathy. He has almost lost caste with many of his old political friends and associates by the devotion he displays towards estabIshing small settlers on land, and his determination that their interests shall be in no way prejudiced by the capitalist orland Speculator. Mr Rolleston has recently been attacked in this dis. trict for his administration'of waste lands. Ho may be open to the allegation of being carried a little too far by' his enthusiastic advocaoy of the'interests of small settlers, and all his plans do not turn out successfully, but his earnest work does bear, on the whole, good fruit, and the Wairarapa settlers have every reason to be satisfied with his administration. We believe that the Ministry with which he is associated has not a very long lease of power before it, When it does go one of our regrets will bo the temporary loss of Mr Rollebton's service? in the Land Department. We say temporary loss becauso he is too useful a man to be out in the cold for any considerable period, and just as Mr BRYtamay be regarded as the best man in the colony for dealing with the Native races, Mr Rolleston must be esteemed the fittest j man to settle waste lands.

Quito a' mania has seized upon the shop keepers of London, particularly those of tho West end, with regard to the mintago. If anyone now wishes to change a sovereign it is almost a necessity that his name and address should bo given and guarantees of his respectability produced. This caution is, in its way, vory admirable, when so many counterfeits are in circulation, but sometimes it is not a little irksome.
