Received November 23, 2.20 p.m.— The force under Hicks Pasha, when the ami pain against the Soudan rebels opened sometime back, consisted ot 8600. infantry, 1400 cavalry, and four batteries of artillery. It is hot definitely known how many men were directly operating against the enemy prior to their recent defeat, but is supposed that fully five thousand were actually engaged in battle, which resulted in the total annihilation of General Hicks' force.. • ALEXANDRIA, Novembor 22. ■

The intelligence of the defeat and annihilation of the Egyptian army in the Soudan is now fully confirmed. The accounts received this evening show that General Hicks had concentrated his entire force, consisting of 10,000 men and ten British officers, when an attack was made by the enemy under El Maluli, the' False Prophet, whose followers are said to have numbered three hundred thousand. On the approach of the rebels, Hicks Pasha formed his troops into a hollow square, and in this position withstood the attack for three days, during which time the fighting was continuousandmost desperate onbothsides. At the end of the third day the square was broken and a general rout of tho Egyptians ensued. The enemy fellon the defeated army and the slaughter was terrible, the whole force of ten thousand men, including General Hicks and the-British officers, being killed. The intelligence has- caused intenso excitement in Cairo, and it is expected that the proposed evacuation of that city by the British forces now stationed there will be postponed, LONDON, November 2% ■ Received November 14,1.10 a.m,— The total reserve in notes arid bullion in the Bank of England is £12,700,000 an increase of £300,000 as compared with last week. Tbe proportion of reserve to liabilities remains at 43 per cent, The Bank rate of discount is unchanged at 3 per cent; market rate, 2 per cent. Consols have advanced to101$. . New Zealand securities remain at last quotations. The wheat and tallow markets are without quotable change. Kauri gum, ■best selected transparent, is quoted at £l4.

At to-day's wool sale the catalogue comprised 9100 hales. The. tone of the sale was again firm, Coarse crossbred wool are now rather higher than at the close of last salqs.
