The Wairarapa Daily WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1883. THE WOOLLEN INDUSTRY.
The Tialt of a canvasser front Wellington to obtain applications for shares in tlio wooljen company now being organised in tho Empire City has created i sorno little flutter in Mastwton, beoause some eighteen months ago we all but launched a company of our own. On that ocoasion it was conclusively proved that tho town could raiso a considerable sum of money for such a purpose, but a want of business tact and manage. menfc, combined with, perhaps, a little of that jealousy which so often mars excellent schemes in small communities, prevented the affair from coming to a successful conclusion, Tho feeling in Masterton is still strong on tho woollen manufacturing question, and many settlers aro desirous to know whether, in the event of the town subscribing in a considerable number of shares, the promoters of the Wellington company would be willihg to place their factory here i Inquiries in this direction have already been made in Wellington, but, from some unaccountable reason, no reply lias been received io tlieni, It is evident that the proposed factory cannot be advantageously erected in Wellington, and it is extremely probable that a sito adjacent to the Masterton railway station, with a good river frontage, would probably be about the best that could be selected •in the interests of .the proposed company. Practically a suitable sito has been held over since the time when tho Masterton project was instituted, and it is ono well worthy of inspection by the promoters of the Wellington company. Of course, if tho Wellington provisional directory do not care to entertain soiuo arrangement which would bs calculated to bring about cooperation btttweon town arid country the matter would bo at an end. Masterton would take some other opportunity of reviving its own woollen factory project. Indeed, it is quite on tho cards that it might have a factory in working order before Wellington. We do not know how the affairs of this new company arc managed, but wo do know that a letter of inquiry written to it nearly a fortnight ago is as yet Unanswered and unacknowledged,

Christiansen, situated on the Upper ®paki, was burned down about midnight on the 19th insl, Ths ownor of the premises was away at the time, but a neighbor, roused by the baling of doga, found that tho place was on fire, The premises being looked he cauld do nothing towards Baving furniture, but by a liberal use of water, which was abundant iu the neighborhood, lis succeeded in saving tho adjacent outbuilding, The premises and furniture are iiisured in tho South British Insurance Company for £6O; the estimated'los's is £IOO. An adjourned meeting of tho Masterton Hospital-Committee waß held yesterday, Present—Messrs Boddington (Chairman), Fannin, lorns, Paige, Beajd, and Payton. A tonder was received from Mb D. Pickering for painting and repairs to the Hospital, and was accepted, Mb Payton slated tltot a prejudice existed in country districts against the Hospital, 011 the ground that a patient when brought down •had frequently to come by tho Hospital into town for medical examination before he could obtain admission. this objeolion he proposed " That applicants for admission to the Hospital coming from stations that contributed to the support of the institution be admitted to the Hospital without presenting the ordinary medical certificate, provided that thoy. brought with them a written recommendation from their employers, and that notice to this effect be given to station proprietors and their employees," Some discussion ensued as to how fa* the Committee could go in the direction proposed by the resolution, without prejudice to the interests of the institution, and uliimatoly, on the motion of Mr Beard, the consideration of it was postponed tg tho noxt ordinary meeting o.f the Copptfe?,
