_ Chhisioburoh, Monday. Heavy rains Were experienced here on Saturday and to-day. No damage from floods is reported. The rain has done immense good to all kinds of crops. On Friday a ploughman on Littles' farm, Waikara, was killed upder a disc harrow through the horses bolting, o,n Saturday night the Clxristohurch agents of Qulcher & Co., commenced lighting a portion of Lyttleton Harbor with electricity and was a great success.

r _ Dunedin, November 18. The directors of theMosgiel Woollen Factory have given £BS to the local Mechanics' Institute on condition that the whole of the factory hands receive free admission to the Institute during the current year. Mr Dryden, manager of (he factory, informed the committees that the oompany had been in the habit of doing something foi their employees everv year, giving them either a picnic or a soiree, and this year they are trying a new experiment, They recognised the fact that the better informed the workmen were the better their work was likely ,to be accomplished. The company hoped the workman would appreciate the step taken, but it was only experimental. Whether it would be continued or not depended on the amount of appreciation shown by the employes of the company. Traffic was resumed this morning, Gordon Bros, nursery in the valley was completely wrecked by the floods. They estimate their loss at £4OO. Clias, Eadie was drowned in trying to cross a creek to get to Goodwood railway station.
Nelson, Monday. On Saturday afternoon a girl carrying a baby Was knocked down by a passing vehicle whilst crossing the road, The infant, a child of Mr Hurley, was kicked by the horse, and has since died.
The Champion Copper Company recently sent twenty tons to Newcastle, and have received the following cable : Out turn, 381 per cent, and sold at twelve shillings per unit." It is calculated that the shipment realised £23 per ton, which is considered very satisfactory. The cross cut is now through the Doctor's lode about two feet wide, surface found to b» 15 at this depth. The manager estimates the Doctor's lode is worth £l5O per fathom, samples of drilling of which appear half native copper, and are to be sent for analysis. These highly encouraging reports are causing excitement.
