' | To'the'Editor,] Sir.,— I noticed in your report of the meeting of tha Masterton Firo Brigade yestorday, that they intended asking for another fire bell to be erectod in Bentley's estate, also to get the' use of the school bell. I think; Sir, it is quite time some step was taken in this matter, but other proposals ought to be heard boforp any action is carried out, It is at present recognised that the ringing of the bell near the Council Chambers every time a chimney blazes .up ,is an abominable nuisance, besides tending to discourage firemen from the continual number of false alarmß, T would, suggest that a much deeper toned bell should take the place of the present fire boll, and that it should only be used in case of fires breaking out in'.any : buildings. -<The present fire could bo .removed to the old sfSJiporhouse,'or'still,remain in the bell . tower,'.for.rjseiq the case of chimney fire 3, In any Berjous outbreak both bells oould be ,ÜBed-w^h''e'ffect ) cand ought to be sufficient' to alarm 'thV whole town, As there is unfortunately no. bell. at the Kurupuni Hall the uso of tho. school bell might be obtained, and in 'serious cases, the Catholic Church. bell as well.
