The Government have made four appointments to work the new Bankruptcy Act, They have placed four corner stones in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, on which the success of this measure must depend. Have they exercised a due discretion in this Ministerial patronage 1 ! Are these corner stones truly laid ] We doubt it! The Wellington appointment is a good one, We are sure Mr 0. 0. Graham is well qualified to fill the duties of his new position as official assignee, but in the name, of all that, is.'extraordinary why; has a newspaper,.;editor ■:; been selepted to administer" the iu tho big -Province''.'pi, Otago ? - What on eapth : is there in the experience'of an editor to qualify" him for such a position] An editor is not supposed to be a trained accountant, and an expert in balance sheets. We do not even regard it as-a compliment
•to-the press that ut leading;member,of' ?ifc- should be. selected for a position which he can scarcely fill with' credit; to himself, to the Government, or to' the public.
The meeting' called by MrOotoman Phillips in order to form a butter and cheeso factory at Featherßt'on has been postponed,
Mrßuohanan.M.H.R., is roported to have purohaaed a shorthorn bull and an Ayrshire ditto at the late Christohuroh Show.
A paper on the historio and economic as'pectß of the lands question was read by Mr Coleman Phillips on Wednesday evening beforo the Wellington Philoadp hioal Sooiety, . - Our Oartorton- contemporary says that a testimonial of £M has beon presented to Mr Sutton. Apparently some misconception exists as to the amount whioh was given, and it is only right that it should be cleared up. "We believe that the purse contained some tweuty sovereigns, From an advertisement that appears in another column it will be seen that Mr 0, W. Goodison of the London Aroade, Auckland and Christohuroh intends opening a London Arcade in Wellington, with a new and varied Block of almost ever; conceivable article in the jewellery and fancy goods line,' The temporary' premises in Cuba street will be opened on December Ist, and the permanent place of business (late McDowell's) in February next.' ' ./The Masterton Fire Brigado held its, usual meeting on Wednesday evening nineteen members being in attendance, It was resolved to ask the Borough Council to erect an additional fire bell somewhere on Btmtloy's estate and to ask the School Oummitto'e to allow the school bell at' Kurupuni id housed for fire alarms,.the present 8in»lo bell being insufficient to rouse the men in all parts of the town, It was also resolved to ask the Council to have two fire plugs inserted in Chapelstreet, and one in Dixon-street, and to give the engine cleaner constant work on .the Borough roads, as the Brigade could not keep a good man at the small wages it was able to offer,
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Waste Lands Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs J. G. Holdsworlh (Chairman), T, Mason, W, W. Taylor, and H, Bunny, The Chairman reported that no applications for land had been received since the last meeting, with regard to the request of Messrs Hondyeido, Marts & Co., to bo allowed- to out and remove timber from Crown laud in the Akiteo district, it was agreed that they be permitted to take posts required on pay ing a royalty of 10s per hundred, under certain conditions. The meeting then adjourned. Attention is directed to Seville's Capil lary Gerrainator, a preparation advertised in another column, for which Mr J, Monteith, of Wellington, is the sole agent for New Zealand, We learn that it is a secret combination of the best, costliest and most stimulating drugs, containing nothing deleterious, and will not injure the most delicate skin, and it 3 entiro freedom from grease, combined with its very pleasant perfume, render it peculiarly agreeable for use, It is also a sure preventive and cure for dandruff ,and scurf, and since its introduction into tho colony, has ganicd a reputation over all.other preparations of the kind, The final concert of the season connected with St Matthew's Church, series was givon in the Theatre Royal last evening to a very larjjo audienco. Part I opened with' a well played piano duet from Mesdames Paige and" Palmer. Then followed a' very effective piece, Mr Grundy singing with expression and much tasto "Children's(Voices," aided by a subdued harmonium accompaniment behind the scenes and the sweet choral voices of his pupils. The effect was very nice and it was thoroughly appreciated by tho audience, The choir boys then came on to the stage and sang "Glorious .Apollo", fery correctly, exhibiting Bigus |hat they havo profited by the excellent training which they have received from Mrs Paigo "itiid Mr Grundy. Miss 0, Palmer, a vocalist "with a pleasing voice, then gave "Tho Blue Alsatians/' .nd was .'well-received Mjs Palmer followed with a piano solo, "Thalberg's last rose of summer." ■ In the hands of an accomplished pianist such as this lady is, this piece is most offective, and her correct rendering of even its most difficult pneBages, secured high enconiums. Mr F. G. Moore came next, and created quite a sensation by his perfect and realistic rendering of " Hear the wild winds ■blow." It was the song of the evening, though in the second part of the programme Mr Gant, by the artistic skill with which he gave "Vanished" maybe said to have divided the principal vocal honors with him. The first part of the programme wound up with " Time Was" by Miss Nicoi, "Blow Gentle Gales," a trio by Messrs Bisb, Moore, and Stevenson, which was encored, and the sensational appearance of Mr Rapp's choir boys in "Drink puppy drink," attired in cay Jockey costumes, and singiug and acting tho ipie.ee with pleasure to themselves and to tho audience. Mr Rapp deserves great credit for this successful hit, and we regret that his absence inWanganui provented him from witnessing tho triumph of his pupils, . This piece was loudly encored, Part II opened with a duet by two little girls Misses A, and 0, Oorbett, which, was .encored. . Tho Orpheus Club followed with a glee which was also redemanded. Mr E. W, Payton gave an operatic song. MrsC. Preoth rendered an effective ballad, and Mr Stevenson sang "Now the Quiet' Moon,"' amid loud applause, Miss Beard gave as a piano solo, Thalberg's "Borne, Sweet Home," 'and lier performance was loudly encored. A quintette by Misses, Jupp, Niool, Watson, and Messrs Moore, and Stevenson went well, and the.song Mr Rapp was to have sung was replaced by " Father O'Flyhn" from Mr B. W, Payton. A farce by the Mastorton Amataur Dramatio Club concluded a very pleasant evening. Messrs Gant and Tapperell did full justice to the lively dialogue of Box and Coi, and had a good coadjator in the representative of Mrs Bouncor. The piece went remarkably well and found high favor amongst the audienco. Mrs Paige throughout the evening played the accompaniments to the various songs with her wonted power and expression! The success of these concerts have very largely depended' upon the services which this lady has rendered at the piano, An. accident happened last ovening to a pony phaeton driven by Miss Vallance and occupied by three other ladies. The horse drawing it became frightened and bolted, finally landing the four ladies in a heap on the footpath in Church-street, (fortunately not hurt in the least), and smashing tho carriage to pieces against tho horse post opposite the Daily office. The terrified animal (hen continued its career with the shafts only, and dashed down .Queen-stroet on the footpath 03 the west side, crossing over the road near Mr Jones fruit shop, and making straight fpr Mr .Cellar's office (probably to take out an accident insurance policy) the door of :Svhiqli'Btopd.invitingly open. He was' no't'a'wblcbme..visitor however, and the door, was unceremoniously slammed in his fa'co,; He then"continued his mad gallop doW the east" of Queen-street footpath, jantl was ultimately captured without [doing any further damage, though children had narrow escapes.

On the same day the. Manawatu River was considerably swollen, the rush of water through the Gorge being very high, One of the suburban allotments in .Masterton which promises to be productive ol a large and permanent fruit supply, io the.garden and orchard of Messrs Groushow and Aftke in Nursery road, Soyeral acros of this land are in cultivation, strawberries being ono of the leading features Long rows of largo and luscious strawberries are now ripening in this plantation, and the proprietors of it will be able to supply the local market tliie season with an almost unlimited stock of this popular delicacy. Already Mr Jones, the well known fruiterer, has displayed in his window appetising samples from this garden. We havo received from Mr T, E, Price a cleverly arranged Christmas card, consisting of a photographic group with a centrepiece representing the Te Ore Ore pah, surrounded by the beads of some hundreds of leading natives in this and other distriots,, The faces come out with remarkable distinctness, The border consists'of handsome native scroll work, and the whole design is most appropriate as a photographic masterpiece, and it reflects the highest credit on Mr T. E. Price. We doubt whether any other artist in tho colony would have been equally successful in tho grouping and arranging of a similar picture.
