The Wairarapa Daily THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8,1883. LOCAL TRADE.

Mastekton is beginning to feel the general trade depression which for some time has been experienced through the length and breadth of the colony. So far tlio town has occupied an almost enviable position. The public works in Wairarapa North under the auspices of the Government, the County, and the Road- Boards have during tho past winter kept trade fairly brisk in the town. We have as a matter of fact had something to be thankful for. Now, however, a brisk labor market in this district has attracted men from other parts of the colony, Competition for any contracts let is somewhat keen, and we are beginning to feel the level to which things have been brought (in other parts of the colony. The low price of wool too is always an important factor in Wairarapa commercial annals. Uiulw any circumstance tho shearing

months of the year are. quiet ones, and till the season's clip is gathered in flockowners do not come into town to spend money;. There is one advantage which temporary periods of depression bring to a community. It is at such times that men cast about to inaugurate new enterprises, to prospect new industrial channels, and launch. out into fields fresh mid pastures • new. When times ave good and men are doing well by their ordinary avocations it is not easy to tempt tliem to try new experiments, but when necessity spurs them to look about them they often lay the keel of their future prosperity and embark in ventures leading them on to fortune which they would never attempt in easier times. Things are a little dull in Masterton just now, and the ; question naturally arises as to what can be done to make them more brisk. If at this juncture any industrial enterprise could be inaugurated with safety, the starting of it would be the best expedient which could be resorted to. We do not believe that the dull time will last long, and if while it still lingers we could initiate some new industry which would permanently benefit the district, we should later on bo able to look back to the dull closing months of th'e year 1883 with a feeling of gratitude.

There is a djjly increasing interest, says, tho Standard, in tho matter of developing our mineral resources, which it is to be hoped will continue until success is reached. Though as yet the other townships have not seconded tho move made by Greytown is orginisini; a Prospecting Committee, thore is a desiro by many in these towns that one of their prominent men should call a meoting or get a few spirited individuals to form themselves into a committee, Meanwhile individuals • hero and thero are prospecting in their own small way, From one end of tho Valley to the other wo hear of persons who havo picked up pieces of quartz or coal, and tho localities aro now coming to light, Of the existence of coal thore is not the slightest doubt; the proof of which lies at the office of this paper; and thero is overy .reason to believe that an immense seam exists not four miles from Groytovrn. These ticketß will be available for six weeks from the date of issue, and will be available on all the Government railways on both islands. Tho holder if he chose, can travol during the six weeks, or keep constantly on the move between Auckland and the Bluff. The charge for these tickets is fixed at fB. Our hnndsome new Courthouse was opened for tho first time this mornine. Mr Wardoll occupied the bench, and Messrs Board, Parker, and Allen represented the bar. The light, cheory, well ventilated court room was decorated with flowers, and its comfortable furniture and equipments appeared to bo almost a matter of surpriso ns well ns congratulation. 'When his Worship took his seat Mr Beard congratulated him upon presiding in the new building, and trusted that the good feeling wliich had been wont to exist between the bench and the bar would continue under tho improved arrangements.- Mr Parker endorsed the sentiments expressed by Mr Beard, and hoped that in the clearer atmosphere they now enjoyed they would havo clearer heads. His Worship said he sympathised with tho expression of gratification at their improved accommodation, No doubt, in years past they had had to put [ up with a coifbiderablo'amount of personal inconvenience. Thero were certain events in the history of men ana towns whicli marked epochs. The opening of the new courthouse was certainly an epoch in the history of Masterton. It was then nearly twentyfive years since ho first sat in this town. At that time there was but ono little shop in tho main street, but thero was a small school house about 8 x 12 where justice was administered. When the late courthouse was built it was felt that great progress had been made. Things had changed since then, and Masterton had gone ahead. He trusted that the new < Courthouse would witness the administration of law and justice tempered with meroy as far as the Bench was conearned, and that with the Bar they would never have scenes in which personal asperities would be manifested, He acknowledged a wish expressed by the Bar that he would be long spared to preside in the new building, but after thirty years service this, in the ordinary course of naturo, could hardly be expected.

Moesrs Hooper & 00. announce that a general holiday will bo observed at the Bon Mavche Warehouse to-morrow. \

There is every prospect of fine Jweather for the Prince of Wales' Birthday to* morrow. No doubt, a considerable number of our townsmen will take advantage of the special train to visit the Taratahi-Carterlen Races. In Masterton itself the main attractions will be the Fito Brigade competition, the cricket match, the Wesleyan service, and the Dramatic entertainment in the Theatre Royal We trust lo s'eo a bumper house at the latter, as Mr Lundqvist deserves well at the hands of the Mqalerton public, and the programme to be submitted is decidedly a popular one. 1 It_ is gratifying to learn that Messrs Williamson and Co., the brokers to the provisional direotors of the Wellington Woollen Company, have succeeded in placing nearly 10,000 shares upon subscribers in the Wellington district. The directors will hold n meeting within a few days, when arrangements will bo made for sending Home orders for the requisite machinery, &e. It is stated that an examination of the ruins on the island of Ischia shows that the destruciion was in a great part due to tlip imperfect construction of the majority of tho houses. Among the victims at Casamicciola were a Signor and Signora Bonavita, who left property worth 5,000,000fr to which there is no direct heir.
