HORTICULTURAL.
'; Tho second annual 'lnhibition held in the ' show room yesterday was far below the , standard of Wnirarapa horticultural oxhibi'j tions both in quality and number of exhibits. This result could have been'fortold from'the apathetic manner in which the committee as ' aliqdy.wcnt to' work.' Tho/success that : attended the efforts*of the Grcytown Society " who undertook tho management last year proves that a combined YVairarnpa exhibition could be made a successful annual institu- ' tion, and the committeo would have done, well to have followed tho example set by tho initiatory committee, and 1 worked ' together for the general good of the district, But it was quite eudant that they did not manifest suillcient interest in the affair to " insure its success, aud it would have beon better for them, under the circumstances, if they had abandoned the project instead of allowing it to be half done. Through the exertions of Messrs Barnard, A. Booth and Brooks tho show room was decorated in a very creditable maimer with (lags, ferns, etc, and the exhibits were arranged to the very best advantage. It is only fair to those gentlemen to state that it is due to their • energies that a show was held this year, and i they deserve great praise for the manner in which they worked to that end. There ! was scarcely any competition among the ' exhibitors, the only class that approached anything of tho kind being vegetables. « Anions; these the- rhubarb was very.'good, . the first honor falling on Mr Everett's exhibit, In cabbages Mr A. Bowers'carried i all before him, Mr E, Goodin doing tho same ' in. potatoes, Some very forward samples of I broad beans and peas, of a good quality, ' were shown by Mr. Carpenter, who took first_ prizes in .both cases, Mr Wilton carried off the lion's share of awards in pot i plants, and Mr Kcmpton did the same with i cut flowers, The only competition in locally t grown fruit was in gooseberries, Mr Kcmpton ' securing first place. Some very good 1 collections of imported fruits were shown, also bottled fruits. and vegetables, The fancy work exhibits were few but good, specially among them being some crewel work by'Mm Sandilands, which called forth repeated remarks of appreciation from the' spectators, A mirror frame made from leather by the same lady was a very artistic piece of work, Miss Camp- ' bell received great praise for some crewel and wool'work, Mr Campin, the local sign writer exhibitodaspocimen of his handiwork ' in all colors and shades, The feature of the show was a spinning-whsel, presided over by Mrs Blomqvist of Cartcrtpn, the ease and precision in which that lady went through the work was.watched with interest by all the visitors. The following gentlemen acted as judges, and it is to be hoped that they will have 'more arduous duties to perform next year if they aro selected for the office: -Messrs H, H, Jackson, Spearink, Everett, Cox, Skeet, andßoisitter, The following is the prizo list : TOT riANTS.
