The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY OCTOBER 26, 1883. THE SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION.
Thb North Wairarapa County Settlers' Association has reached another stage of development. It is now fully equipped for service by the election which we reported yesterday of two vice-presidents and fifteen delegates, The result of the ballot is fairly satisfactory. The return of Mr Meredith as a vice-president rather upset the plan originally proposed by Mr Hawkins, but the best laid schemes aro wont to miscarry on points of this kind. The delegates are an excellent selection of the representatives of the different country sections of the county, but it would have been as well if a few town residents had been mixed with the country settlers, About half the members of the Association are engaged in pastoral and farming pursuits, the other half are not. The whole of the delegates are chosen from among the former. Apparently, town, sefciilers have given their votes very largely to country settlers, but country settlers have not returned thocompliment. Of course country settlers have a right to exclude the towjvfrom itheir counsels, but we doubt whether thay. acted 1 wisely -in doing so. If meet-j ings of delegetes aro frequent 1 there will be now an obvious diffi-
culfcy from the composition of the delegate body in obtaining a quorum of monitors. However, the delegates aro elected, and they consist of men who to a considerable extent the confidence of all classes of settlers, The next point of interest is what will they do? Will they take .their instructions from the association, or will they consider that they are authorised to act on their own authority, - We presume that they will take counsel to 1 gother in the first instance as to the procedure which is ;to guide the future of the association, and then meet the members of it with a matured programme. Till ■ the shearing season is over we cannot expect to hear from the delegates, but before the year closes we hopo to see them meeting and deliberating.
