Deceased came to Southland by the |. ship Western Monarch, in 1878, and ' had been employed as surfaceman on , the railways till laid up with supposed , spinal disease. He had been in and > out of the hospital here several times, and doctors failed to find any indica- ; tions of disease, und supposed the case . one of incipient brain disease. He was i a most troublesome patient, and, in the I opinion of medical .men, was more a | subject for the Asylum, He had no family, and his wife worked to sup- , port both latterly. She went out , about 4 o'clock, when he was cleaning a gun; on returning she found him i. dead, The landlord says he heard two 1 shots, but did not think anything of them. Deceased, was formerly resident ' in Australia, Jand emigrated to New Zealand, and from what can be gathered, seems to have been hypochondriacal onarrivalinthe colony. The suicide caused uo surprise to those who had watched deceased. Dunedin, October 24. Ah Wee, a Chinaman, has committed suicido at Jacob's Gully by hanging himself from a tree. AN IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. Auckland, October 24. In a case in the Resident Magistrate's Court Murdoch v. Sydney Taiwhanga, a claim for £54 for goods supplied, sued on a .promissory note, plaintiff was nonsuited, as according to the Act of 1883, the note should have been interpreted into Maori, defendant being a native.' It seems that a copy of the Act had not reached Auckland when the note was ; mado out, • • .THE PRICE OF MUTTON. Dunedin, October 24. The,frozen-meat "trade seems to be telling a tale on the supply of mutton for the local market. .At the Yards to-day, prime merino sheep brought up to 20s 3d, and mutton is quoted at fully 3|d per lb by the Auctioneer. Dunedin, October 24. The master butchers of Dunedin met to-night, between 40- and 50 being present, and decided }o raiso the price of all butchers' meat by ono penny per pound. 'The libel action Denniston v Daily Times commenced to-day, Messrs Stout and Crooke for plaintiff, and Messrs Smith and Chapman for defendants. ' The tender of Messrs Fergus k Blair, of Dunedin, for' £94,074 for the construction of the 'Merßey-Deloraine railway has been accepted by the'Tasmanian Government. Auckland, Thursday. The half-yearly meeting of. the Bank of New Zealand was-held to-day, The profits are reported as £84,000, or rather less than for the last half year. The usual dividend of 15 per cent, was declared. £25,000 was added, to the reserve, and £B9OO carried forward. Coin and money at short call in London is one million nine hundred thousand.
