The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY OCTOBER 20, 1883. THE MASTERTON SCHOOL.

We publish in another column the result of the examination of the Masterton school. The annual report of this school is always a subject of (special interest to teachers, to pupils, to the school committee, and to parents, but more especially so on the present occasion because last year for the first time it took a position as a

premier school in the Wellington Educational District, and many were anxious that it' should retain the prestige which it-then obtained. There was an element of doubt-as to actual results in the late examination because two drawbacks militated against high passes: first, the .examination,.,. was held two months earlier "than usual, giving ten instead of twelve months for preparation 1 ; and, secondly, because it was said to be i little stiffer this year than formerly, The Inspector this year is, as it were, tuning his schools for the first time up to concert pitch.' The ordeal was, therefore, not ian easy one, and it is gratifying to be jiasrared by Mr-Lee that the results are better this year than last, The aggregate percentage of passes may not I be; so great, but better all round work has been done, and 1 the more difficult standards, which were somewhat weak last year, are strong this. Of course' till the other large schools of the Wellington Educational District are examined no comparison can be made between them . and Masterton. But whatever be the result of their passes itis quite clear that Masterton again takes an honorable position. There are many votes of thanks which ought to be recorded on such an occasion.' The public in this, district are indebted for* the honorable position of their scliooHo.Mr. Grundy's, ability andindustry. They are also indebted to fMj teaching staff, which, under his super vlsionf has attained such satisfactory -resiflts, They owe much to the Wellington Educational Board, which has always been liberal in its dealings with the Masterton School, and they also owe something to the

chairman and members of the local school committee, who have watched keenly the. progress of the' school,, and liave rarely missed an opportunity of advancing its interests. '
