DR HOLUB'S EXPEDITION.
Dr Holub intends to start his second expedition across the Continent, of Africa from south to north at the end of September, The necessary preparations are made, the programme as far as possible traced out, six European servants have been engaged, and there remains now only one obstacle to be removed—the insufficiency of means for his great undertaking, The cost of the expedition was some years ago estimated by Dr Holub at £6OOO, but since then it has been found that £2OOO more will be necessary to warrant success, unly half of the required sum has as yet been raised, and of this, after all preliminary purchases have been made, there will only remain £IOOO to start with. As there was no prospect of raising the money in Austria or of interesting the government in the undertaking, Dr. Holub turned to his friends in England who had promised to aid him. But here also, say 3 the rTeuo Froio Prcsse, his. expectations were disappointed. Assistanco was promised him, but only on condition that he should travel from west to east instead of. from south to north, and that he should subordinate exploration to English commercial interests. Dr Holub refused these terms, and returned from England without having accomplished anything. There remains now only one way by which he hopes to be able to raise the money—namely, by obtaining a loan from the Cape Government which on his first expedition, offered him .£4,000 for his collections, Dr Holub hopes to repay the loan from the produce of the ethnographical, zoologi cal, botanical, and geological collections which he expects to make during the expedition,
