CORRESPONDENCE.
.—-' t ; ''■' i < "POOROLD BILLY." | To'the Editor. J • Sir—lt is not always easy to avoid giving offence,by what Ido say,.but my difficulties seriously increase if offence is to be taken at what Ido not say. lam sure Mr Shute will be glad to know that I never used the words which have caused so much distress, In no part of this' or any other speech have I used the words " old identities" or" old arrivals." I am: very well aware that there are old settlers here, engaged alike in alieep" farming cultivation, and trade, whose enterprise is t.Lo life of tlio' district, nnd I guarded myself, as I thought, from being supposed, to be'ignorant:of-.this 'by saying that " poor old Billy" was" a type of a certain mv old colonials," &c. I can assure Mr Shute that I did not intend any of the memorial honors of >my''monument.for him, and that I hope he will live long and be a valuable member of our' Association. ~! am, &e,, ../_:;-• | .'".- '/.. Sir,—According to the report of the Greytown Cricket Club, as appeared in. your issue of Saturday last, that Club was only fairly beaten once last season, and then by a combined Wellington team. In the report of the Masterton •Cricket Club they claim to have won three out of the four matches they ■played last season: one of them being a match with Greytown, which Masterton won by 67 runs. Although' the Greytown report claims to have defeated . Masterton once, they have evidently forgotten to mention the defeat they sustained in the return match at Masterton, ... ..',... lam,&c.j ! Cricketer,
