The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1883. BUSINESS TACTICS.

' The Parker case has created a con siderable amount of interest in Mas*terton during the past two days, and if it is to be taken as a revelation of the manner m which business as a rule is conducted in this town, we have some reason to bo ashamed of ourselves. ! We believe that this is not the case, and we are glad to observe that public opinion is unanimous in condemning the practices that have been revealed in this particular case, The extraordinary letter published in our report of the proceedings yesterday would have deemed an exaggeration if it had appeared in a work of fiction. The writer of it apparently regarded it in two lights, one as a specimen of business tactics, and the other as a piece of original humor. He certainly deserves more credit for it from the latter point of view, It is perhaps hard to determine the exact limits within which business tactics are justifiable. We have high authority for holding that men may be wise as serpents, but then the same text enjoins that they shall also be harmless as the colored pigeons which were an incident in the Parker case. There is, probably, wherever business competition is keen, a tendency to sacrifice principle to expediency, and to resort to practices which are as wrong as they are unwise. In this colony, as in other countries—in this generation as in past generations—business enterprises which thrive are those which are founded and conducted on right principles. Momentary advantages are often obtained by expedients which are inconsistent with any | high standard of morality, but they I become in the long run sources of ' weakness rather than of strength. A j good name in New Zealand is almost f the best capital a man can have. The | tradesman who thinks more of being ! smart than he does of being truo is his own enemy. We would like to see Masterton bearing a good name in commercial circles, and do not for a moment desire to defend or extenuate any practices which are open to censure. Commercial morality throughout flew Zealand is not what it should bo. "The trail of the serpent" is to lie found not only in Masterton, but in every other centre of population, It is, however, our business to take the beam out of our eye in the first instance, and when we have done this we can, with a clear conscience, endeavor to set our neighbors right.

On Monday evening the annual Home Mission meeting will be held in the Wesleyan Church, Masterton, when ad dreßses will be given by ministers and others. Our Greytown friends are talking about l respecting the ranges. One strong prospeding company in which all parts of the Wairarapa might unite would probably prove a success, but we tear that email or weak associations for this purpose would end, as they did formerly, in disappoint nient. We would recommend a Wairarapa Prospecting Company with a capital euy of ±'sooo, tu test the ranges thoroughly from one end of tho district to'the oiber.

A queer method was adopted recently by the Oldham Salvationists, to show their feeling against the authori-

ties. Having been prohibited playing their Land on Sundays, to the annoyance of other places of worship, they adopted an extraordinary proceeding. " In our country," said the Englishman as he learned back in his chair, " before we marry we arrange to settle a certain sum on the wife." Mdnie Patti's reception nightly at Covent Garden leaves no room for doubt as to her unabated popularity, Whenever she appears an audience thoroughly representative of all departments of rank and fashion, and with representatives of every branch of'art and literature, There is a suggestion that her uppermost notes show sigh% the effect of five and twenty years' wear and tear, but her admirable method conceals any very percept ible falling off,
