FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

. ... Auckland Wednesday. A fire broke out at two o'clock this morning in the.centre of a blook of five wooden shops' in Wyndham-street. The conflagration originated in a shop and-tenement occupied by Jacobs, bootmaker.,' Jacobs, his wife, and two children who slept in the upper story narrowly escaped with their, lives. Mrs Jacobs was awakened by the bedroom becoming full of smoke, at the same time' she noticed flames issuing from the shop window below. The neighbors were attracted by her I screams, . and procured a ladder and rescued one'of the children by the window. Mrs Jacobs in the excitement, got out at the other window and fell to the .ground, but escaped unhurt. Jacobs and the other child escaped by clambering into the windows of an adjoining shop.. The lire brigade succeeded 'in confining the. ravages of the fire to Jacobs' shop, although. Hare's stationery shop, Cavanagh'sgrocery, Bucktown's secondhand shops'-and . stocks were much injured. Jacob's stock is insured for £IOO in the Standard ; Hare's £2OO in Norwich Union j Cavanagh's £l5O in South British; Bucktown's £SO in Union, The buildings, which belong to Glenfield and Mason, wore burnt a few months ago', " Later, The block was insured in the South British for £IOOO. The estimated loss to the building is £SOO. A patient at the Lunatic Asylum assaulted another with a broom-stick to-day, fracturing his skull.
