The Masterton Volunteer Fire Brigade held a social meeting last evening at the ii i»ude station, when thirteen members ware present, Secretary Easthope in the chair. A new feature was introduced into the proceedings in the shape of the tint of a series of debates which the members intend to hold for their own edification and amusement. The anbjeoc chosen for this occasion was " Ought Insurance Companies to contribute towards the support of Fire Brigades?" . Those who were in favor of the affirmative argued that fire brigades really worked in the interest of Insurance Companies and saved them immense sums of money; it waß therefore only just that the maintenance of the brigades should be iu a great measure borne by the societies so benefited. The speakers on the opposite side, of the question maintained that brigades'did more than save money for Insurance Companies, they saved property which ,\yns not insured, articles that money oould : not replace, and in some cases life itself) jThey also argued that a large : fire was a>, ■direct less to the whole town, by throw.ing out of gear its andv.by. depriving many persons of their employe mont, ; From this point of view it was hold that the inhabitants of a town should support the Fire Brigade throughthe Municipal Council by. means of a fire rale. The affirmative was ultimately carried by the casting vote of the Chairman. Tho members were so pleased with the result of this meeting that they resolved that Wednesdays alternating with the practice nights Bhould be devoted to social improvement, The subject for the next social meeting will be a debateable essay on astronomy, by the Seoretary,

The evidence in the case of robbery with violence • heard this morning at Masterton revealod a pandemonium phaze of hotel life whioli ought to be put down. The police cannot efficiently supervise remote country houses, and apparently scenes of the grossest debauch and immorality are of frequent occurence in many of them. The responsibility of permitting this rests in a measure on country Licensing Committees, who are not sufficiently careful to see that only thoroughly reliable and competent persons are permitted to hold licenses. The character of some country hotels is notorious, and the Wairarapa is disgraced by them, In the present instance the bidder ot the Taueru license is evidently an honest, well-meaning man, but one who is scarcely equal to maintaining order Hmong roughs, Statements were made in Court this morning, Borne of which were unfit for publication, which clearly show the condition of this par licular house is one that ought not to be derated by any Licensing Committee.
