MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting was held last evening Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs Price, Perry, Gapper,; Heron, Caselberg, and Chamberlain. : Tbe minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and correspondence read. The returning officer reported tho election of Messrs B, Chamberlain and J. Williams as Councillors at the recent election, . PETITIONS, Seyevalresidentson : a■road off the rjppcr Plain' road, 7 through property cut up some time ago by Mr Chamberlain, petitioned 4be Council to malco their road passable. Cr Gapper stated the street had never been formed, nor oven fenced off. He questioned whether the Borough was responsible for works on this.road. Ho did not agree that because the Council had accepted the plan of the subdivision of the property they undertook to bake the street. (Hear, The clerk explained that the plan had been adopted ur the same way as that of Dixon's estate and other properties, • /; The petition was referred to the Works Committee. ;

NURBERV ROAD. Settlers on this street petitioned the Council to mako some three or four chains of the road, • Referred to the Works Committee. RECEPTION OF THE*' GOVERNOR. Letters were read from the Secretary of the Reception Committee, asking that a public holiday be proclaimed on Thursday, and informing Councillors that they were placed on the Reception Committee to receive tbe Governor at the station. -r The Mayor stated he had proclaimed Thursday a half-holiday. It remained with Councillors as a whole to assist at tho reception. WOIiKS COMMITTEE. The report recommended that the Akura road be repaired, and that tenders be called for forming and metalling Villa-street, . \ FINANCE COMMITTEE, The committee recommended accounts amounting to £7l 9s lOd for payment. THE CATTLE BAULKS. The Mayor reported; that the Government had not done anything in tho matter of removing the cattle baulks in Lincoln road; . CY Gapper: Its just on a par with other treatment by the Government, Cr ■ Casolberg :>rnbved that the Government be again written to on the subject. Perhaps if an accident happened in the meantime it would induce the Government to pay a little attention to the Council's communications on the, subject, Cr Gapper seconded.—Carried.

GRAVEL PIT. The Works Committee were 'requested to report at text meeting on the best means of preserving the gravel pit recently acquired by the Council. LIGHTING THE TOWN. Cr Caselberg moved that a Committee be appointed,'to consist of His Worship the Mayor, and Cis Price, Lowes, Gapper, and the mover, to report that day month on the best means of lighting the town either with gas or electricity. Cr Gapper would rather Cr Perry was substituted for his name on the Committee. Ho was tired of the subject.

Cr Caselberg: You will be in good company: Yon had hotter stay.. : Cr Gapper: Question 1 (Laughter). Cr Heron did not see what good could come from, the appointment of the committee; • -It s had ! been done before. He should vote agaiusfc the motion.

Cr Gapper moved as an amendment that the matter stand over to that day six months. He need. not state his reasons. Cr Chamberlain seconded.

The amendment vras carried,;-on division. Ayes-Crs Heron, Gapper, Chamberlain, and Perry. Noes—The Mayor, and Crs Price, and Caselberg. KEOEPTION OP THE GOVERNOR. A long discussion took place on this question, and it was finally resolved that the reception be ; carried ont as arranged by the committee. The Counoil then adjourned.
